Hi all, I recently bought a new/open box 64gb iPhone SE A1723, and activated it on the Sprint unlimited free year plan. Previously, I had a Motorola G3 on Republic Wireless. Since RW used Sprint towers, and I've always been more than happy with their service everywhere I go, I thought moving to Sprint would be fine. Picked up the iPhone in the process of switching.

Now, where the $130 moto would get good to great LTE reception, the iPhone often drops down to 3G or 1x. That would typically be ok, the 3G connection is about 1mbps, but for some reason it seems to take a long time to negotiate a link. Just because I have a few bars of 3g doesn't mean the phone will actually connect to the internet, it seems hit or miss. I've updated the profile/prl and network settings, and set the phone up as new, with no change. I live right outside a large metro area, total LTE on Sprint coverage map.

First Q: Is the iPhone SE cell antenna design somehow inferior to other handsets? I know Sprint isn't great, but I'm really disappointed reception has gotten worse moving from the very cheap motorola. The phone was slow and laggy, but at least always provided me with a great data connection. I love everything else about the SE.

Second Q: I haven't upgraded from the iOS 9 it came with. Would upgrading to iOS 11 carry any chance of improving its cellular performance?

Thanks in advance!

The SE's antenna system is a 6 year old proven concept ever since the original iPhone 5. Your issues are most likely related to Sprint. If you really want a good comparison, ask a friend on another device on Sprint to compare signal and performance on the same spots you have issues at.
