Bug description: When turning off wifi, when mobile data is also turned off, the data usage under mobile data-system services- DNS services will go up, despite mobile data being off.

Reproduction steps: Note the value of DNS services of Cellular/ Mobile data. Make sure it is turned off, and wifi is on. Then turn off wifi. Now look at the same value, and it will have went up.

The behaviour of Cellular/ Mobile data using data for push and DNS while disabled was already documented in this post by me, though in the case, both DNS and push could go up, and sometimes randomly. However, this is now a brand new phone, with a brand new sim card that wasn't backed up from the original.

Hi,

I am sorry but I can't reproduce this issue on 14.4.2. I did exactly what you stated;

1. Looked at the DNS Value: 16.0MB
2. Disabled Mobile Data
3. Waited a few minutes, then disabled wifi
4. Waited a few more minutes, checked the DNS value, still 16.0MB.

Best of luck.

Issue may be because the increase isn't large enough to round up to 16.1. You might have to reset statistics, as the increase is usually fairly small. I am just baffled why it is happening :/

In that case, what you are seeing may be a "Dns Announcement" or "lookup." That would explain why it would be a small increase. If that is all that it is, it would not probably an actually established connection. The system is probably trying to connect, DNS is a critical protocol in that process because everything online is assigned an IP address, DNS is what translates it to a web address like google.com(IP=172.217.4.46).

Are you talking to me? The other post was me asking about an issue a month ago. Now I am trying to see if anyone else can duplicate it.

I am aware of the critical nature of DNS, butif there is no mobile data or wifi connection, it shouldn't be possible to perform a DNS lookup, and that doesn't explain the behaviour I described in the other post.

The post about "duplicate" was for the mods to remove because I can't remove it myself.

As for the issue at hand, it was a stab in the dark, I don't honestly know why it would do that. More or less brainstorming. Hopefully it will be fixed soon.

As in your duplicate comment/post, or this thread I created, which I don't think is a duplicate as I have a way to reproduce now?

No, it was just to remove that one post. The site went down yesterday, when it first came back, things were wonky. I still am unable to reproduce the issue but I did see this thread. Seems somewhat similar to your issue, I would keep an eye on it as well, probably a bug of some sort that is only affecting some people,

Ah yeah that's right, it did. Forgot that. I don't see how it could only be some people, given I have observed this on two different phones now, the second of which wasn't restored or backed up from the other in any way.

Bugs can be weird like that. There is really no logic behind most of them. More or less, when a bug exists, what is the "trigger" and how widespread is the "trigger." I will continue to look at mine, I will also check the wifes phone tomorrow to see if her's is showing similar symptoms. Either way, I would hope that if the radio's are actually off, that there is no transmission, and hoping that the issue that you see is more benign than anything.

Update: Seems that push notifications and general can also increase, though this morning was the first time I have noted it.

Update: Been a month, more or less the same behaviour has been observed during this time.
