Even though the mobile data connection is shown active by display of “4G” at top right corner of phone screen, the mail app home screen displays “Network Offline” at the bottom.

There is no other app which shows the network status.
hence the status has been observed only in mail app.

You don't need to have a display of the network status. If your WiFi is turned off and your only connectivity is via cellular (no hotspot used) then if an app that needs network access works then you know you have it. See if Safari works.

If it doesn't try resetting the network system preferences. Be careful - don't wipe your system since that is also an option.

thanks.
After reset, the issue resolved.
however what I am worried is the back-end disconnection of cellular network which might lead to consequential issues. The display of“network offline” at the bottom of the mail app home screen suggests that the cellular network did get disconnected at some instance and which did not update even after restoration of network connectivity. That event of cellular network disconnection is to be avoided I feel.

What did you reset?

Reset it and forget it. You already reset it and fixed it all there is to do now is forget it and enjoy using a properly working device.
