Haven't seen ANY mention of this on any forum or video review when they're talking about the camera, and it never occured to me because center stage is always marketed on the flat stationary iMac. The pure quality isn't that much better, but the problem with laptops is that your screen is below your face so your image appears from below your chin, and your eyes looking down. With center stage activated, it somehow levels your face and also gets a perfect amount of your shoulders no matter what your angle your screen is at. So if you have your screen tilted back so that it's more comfortable to read, the camera still makes you perfectly perpendicular, it raises your image, and makes your eye contact MUCH more level. Even using Continuity Camera with an iPhone does NOT make your eye contact level with center stage activated, it still looks like you're looking down at the screen. With this built in camera it's like 90% of the way there for some reason, I think it somehow raises the camera angle? It's amazing.
