centralized storage for photos?

I am trying to find the most practical place for my family to store all of our photos (and short videos). Needs to be a place where we can each independently access all of the photos. We have two MacBook pros, one of which is ~5 years old, as well as two iPhones and a new digital SLR camera.

We probably need at least 10-20 GB of storage (ideally more as we accumulate more photos and videos). We currently have the 20GB iCloud storage plan, which is pretty much maxed out. Should we just upgrade to the 50GB plan, or is there a better option?

An external 1TB drive (these days don't waste money on smaller drives) via USB 2 or FW hold be OK. You can get such drives at Costco, Sams and others on the cheap. But.....you need to have Time Machine in your mac backing up the internal drive and the new external drive. The backup drive can be either inside a Time Capsule or just another external 1TB drive.

How is multiple ownership going to work? What if someone makes a modification to a photo, including deletion, that others don't want? If everyone equally owns the photos....then no one does.

Thanks for the quick reply. I use my laptop at both work and home, so it's not stationary and thus I don't think an external HD connected via USB or FW will work. I thought about networking the HD, but what I really need is a program (or web-based service) that will allow us to organize photos in folders, etc.

I just read about Loom. Any thoughts on that?

I use Lightroom to organize and edit my photo library on an 3TB external drive array and back it up on a time capsule. Sorry I can't help with loom or other net photo archive services.

How about an NAS with redundancy to prevent data loss in case of drive failure?
It allows for simultaneous independent access of photos, even from remote locations if you have it set up right.
Or you could try a Dropbox subscription and have all the photos sync across the computers.
