Some of my dvds won't recognize or play in my macbook. They just spin and stop, repeat a few times, and then eject from my macbook. No windows come up and the disc does not show up anywhere. These are store bought dvds that play fine in any other dvd player. For instance, the feature disc of "The Doors" won't play, but the special feature disc will. Some of my other dvds will recognize and play however. Please help.

hey, i have a similar problem, my macbook doesnt recognise any dvds, if you find a solution, could you let me know?

Some DVDs, like the DVD/CD combo for Weird Al's "Straight out of Lynwood" won't play because they do not conform to DVD specifications, and it is a better idea then having a possibly warped disc causing problems with the drive or breaking apart.

The other thing is that perhaps the lens is dirty, so it can't focus on the disc correctly. Try finding a CD/DVD cleaner that has physical brushes on it, and it should clean the lens.

if your MacBook is still under warranty or is covered by AppleCare, try to take it in to a Genius Bar WITH some of the disks it will not recognize. The drives used are not the all time best drives and are often replaced after testing. I know of three that have been replaced after exhibiting the same type of behavior- and replacement resolved the difficulty on all three.

I have this exact same problem. I took my MacBook to an Apple authorised support place (no Apple stores near me) on Saturday, the guy had a look, confirmed that the selection of DVDs I brought with me worked okay on his MacBook but not mine, took it to pieces, checked it all over, put it back together again and ordered me a new drive - should be here this week :D

All under the existing 12 month warranty.

I have the EXACT SAME problem. I'm using DVD Ripper. I have 2 Macbook pro's & if it won't play in one, I have to use it in the other & visa Versa. Its not the disk drive. When I can play dvd's most of the time & then not part of the time. I get most of my movies from RedBox as soon as they are released. SO at the moment, I have to use 2 different Macs to get the job done.
