Yes, the title is intentionally insulting/annoying. I really don't care what processor you like to use, but I have seen a few threads about the new PowerMacs, like this one:
https://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?p=1836397#post1836397
That have people saying the PowerMacs are way to expensive.

So, I thought maybe a little insult would get people going. ;)
I would like to challenge anyone out there to match this system (attached)

2.5GHz Quad-core PowerPC G5
4GB 533 DDR2 ECC SDRAM- 4x1GB
250GB Serial ATA - 7200rpm
NVIDIA GeForce 6600 256MB SDRAM
16x SuperDrive DL (DVD+R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW)
Apple Keyboard & Mighty Mouse - U.S English
Mac OS X - U.S. English
Accessory kit
AppleCare Protection Plan for Power Mac (w/ or w/o Display)

Now, a couple of systems I have configured on thinkmate and others, do not automatically include USB, firewire, network cards, etc.
So any configured system must also have the basics, as specified on http://www.apple.com/powermac/specs.html

USB 2.0, Firewire 400 & 800, dual port Gigabit Ethernet, etc.

Come on, all you, Apple is sooooo expensive folks now is your chance to prove me wrong. Heck I even bought the RAM at Apple that should give you a head start! :p

Touche, my boy! Nicely done.

Anybody else in awe of how "cheap" Macs are these days?

I've only been in the market for 4 or 5 years, and I'm staggered at how much more you get for the money now.

Integrated video? Id like to see the performance of 4 monitors with an integrated video card
No Dual gigabit ethernet?
No Firewire?
Not ECC ram?
Not 500mhz RAM?

And for $100 dollars less, who wants to run Windows?
Yes, 16gb of ram is much more than the 4 gig I did, but the RAM is not comparable.

Let's try to keep the comparisons close, please.

He's joking or trolling. If you look at it closely (or look on the Dell website) it's actually 4 separate Dell Dimension 5150 computers. The Dimension 5150 doesn't come with dual or dual dual processors.

Does the WinPC need to have 4 procs, or can it have 2 super fast procs that would probably be comparable to the Quad PowerMac?

I'm pretty certain there are no such processors that would be viable competition (price-wise)

So the best dual Opteron can't beat a dual, dual-core PowerMac? I think it might be comparable. If you use the http://www.xicomputer.com/products/ link that BrandonSi posted, you can configure a system with a dual Opteron for around 5 grand that's great. It just happens to use 400 MHz DDR RAM, that's all. It's also ECC, which the PM doesn't have.

Yup, it can be done.. but if I'm gonna spend $5k, it aint gonna be on a windows box :) I think we'd all pretty much agree on that!

Listen, I fully understand your argument, that if you're going to buy a workstation Apple is just as competitive as all other makes. The powermac is not a consumer machine. Fine.

We all know this, I think.

However, if you want to strt a thread saying "Fanboys, the mac is cheap!" Then what I'm pointing out is the fact that you can buy FOUR very capable Dells all with 17" LCD monitors, all with 4GB of ram... for the price of this "cheap" system that you're showing off.

I think I've proven that your mac is expensive (which is the counter to the point of your post). Christ, if it weren't expensive everyone around here would have one.

Did the "Qty 4" give that away? :p

I was not saying it was cheap, I was saying it was not overpriced for what it does, especially in comparison to other similar Professional workstations.
The point of the thread is to have anyone show me and the rest of the MR community that the powermac is somehow overpriced compared to comprable systems. And so far, no one has.

The $3300 asking price of the quad is the same amount I payed 3 years ago to be the first person on my block to own a 1st gen 17" powerbook.

Looking back now, wish I'd saved the funds for right now.

:)
