Unfortunately, probably not good.

Apple at this point in time, does not seem to want to offer a matte option on their consumer level laptops and desktops. So if you want a matte screen you must go with a MBP or MacPro.

I know a few folks who have not purchased a new MB or iMac because of the glossy screen. Some are switcher types, others are from the Mac faithful. So the switchers go with a new PC and the Mac faithful just wait and hope...

I think there's a good chance they'll go back to matte (or something like it)

But not this soon

IMO for the consumer (non professional) Glossy is better for desktops (with desktops you are indoors always and most should not have visibility issues.) and matte is better for laptops (Laptops can be used outdoors and often time the lighting poor. It can be very distracting).

I don't know about all that

All I know is matte is better for me

As a professional graphic designer....

As a graphic designer and photographer, I totally disagree with your statement. I just received a 2.8 iMac extreme and could not be happier with the monitor. Yes, there is some glare, but not as bad as has been posted by people who only want a matt screen.....

I see nothing wrong with a glossy screen.

And no Apple will not be doing a matt screen anytime soon.

I think you two are in violent agreement.

I doubt it. It looks to me as Apple is trying to switch all their computers to glossy screens, so I don't think they will revert back to matte for the foreseeable future.

To be honest having now used the glossy iMac screen, if I were now to be given a choice between glossy and matt, I would go for the glossy. Having said that I think Apple should give consumers the option, however I doubt the Al iMac would look as good sat on the desk with a matt screen, on or off.

Very very very unlikely.

Glossy screen is a great way to differentiate between their consumer and professional lines.

Glossy = looks great. Consumer.
Matte = accurate colours. Professional.

My brother in law has a laptop here at my house that has a glossy screen. I can't stand it. Just the glare coming in from the windows, very indirect light... not good for me. I like my matte iMac intel 17 just fine. I'm one that would only want to upgrade my imac if htere was a matte Aluminum model come out.

Of course, my next mac will likely be a mini. Very good chance they update the mini at macworld in January.
