About to purchase the Airpods Max but was wondering if people think there might be some tweaks to a newer version released at WWDC next week?

Beyond a rumor of new colors there haven't been any rumors of a soon to come upgrade for the Max. Of course, none of us KNOW what Apple will announce next week.

Highly unlikely. Even the new colors would be a shock at WWDC honestly. That would more likely be a part of an iOS event or even just a press release. I would not expect Apple to ever do anything more than colors on this version of AirPods Max. If they ever update them, it will likely be very different than what we have now. Total speculation of course, but as much as I like mine, the market seems to have not materialized.

zero I would think, it's a pure consumer item, there's little for devs there. Only thing I could see changing that is if Apple introduced a radical improvement to spatial audio, maybe tied to VR, but even then I would expect to see the APPs refreshed for it, not the APMs yet

0%. They don’t update their AirPods on a yearly basis. The AirPods Pro are almost 3 years old and are the ones rumored to get an update.

Probably the earliest you’ll see any kind of update is this fall. I think if you’re wanting them, then you should just go ahead and order.

Do we have any numbers to suggest how these are doing? I'd not be surprised to see them discontinued TBH. I have some, but my usage has been almost nil. I'd wear them travelling or in the office but the pandemic (with work from home) removed those needs almost entirely. And they were already a tougher sell, being twice the price of something like the Bose QuietComforts (which were already fairly premium for most people).

There really is no indication from Apple, however, the vibe they give off is very HomePod like. Many thought the HomePod was selling decently, but when it was discontinued there was evidence that Apple was still selling through their initial wave. I would not be surprised if the same is true of the APM. There is no buzz online about them. It is exceedingly rare to see them in public or know someone who has them. In fact, I do not know one other person who owns them outside of forums.

A difference that I notice is that the AirPods Max's manufacturing dates are still tracking reasonably well the date of purchase, while for the HomePod even years later after launch you'd still get samples manufactured around the launch date.
I see quite a few APMs here in Paris, but it's a more recent phenomenon - perhaps related to their current low price on third party retailers - and nothing comparable to the amount of Sony / Bose over-ears around, themselves nowhere near the amount of AirPods.

As I don't see how Apple can solve the APM's flaws without a complete, thorough re-design, I'm not expecting a significant update, other than maybe a mid-life electronics-related one (H2 chip ?), for a while.

No one thought the homepod was selling decently. There were constant news articles about how it was not selling decently.
