Hello there,

I want to buy an ATV since this last summer, I was decided to buy the 40GB version and even went to my local store... thing was that they didn't had it in stock. Then I heard the rumors about the "It's only rock'n'roll" event, and I held back until then to see if there was a revision of the product. As you all know, 40GB was discontinued and 160GB price droped. So it turned out good to wait.

However, I have also heard the rumors about the ATV development teams working overtime these last days... So I am worried I can be getting an ATV that can be outdated in just a couple of weeks... So my question is: what do you think are the possibilities of having new ATV hardware before christmas? Is there any apple event announced during 2009? Is it usual for Apple to organize events during these dates?

Thanks a lot for your comments.

I really do hope they release a new one.. only time will tell.

Unfortunately, I don’t think it’s going to happen. There’s some hope. Apple has not announced that their product line-up for Holiday 2009 is set, yet. They typically do that at their last special event of the year and/or through a press release.

But with them recently dropping the 40GB model and allowing the 160GB model to take its place for the same price, any chance of an Apple TV hardware update is over for this year.

I do expect they’ll put out a minor software update by the end of the month that addresses some issues and new features that were introduced with iTunes 9.

It looks like maybe they’re waiting on the engineers they acquired with PA Semi to come up with something for them next year.

Apple dropped prices of various iPod models before announcing a replacement few days later. So I wouldn't discount the possibility of a replacement.

That said, we are talking about Apple TV, whose hardware remains unchanged since it started shipping about 2.5 years ago. Thankfully, the product remains in rotation and received 7 software updates since. The fact that it has yet to be updated for iTunes LP and iTunes Extra opens up speculation, however... as these features work best in home theater setting that Apple TV is designed for.

I really hope hardware update, however minor, is coming.
