The new 27" 5K iMacs have done away with target mode.

I don't know if it's a technical limitation, or simply because Apple eventually plans on selling standalone 5K displays.

Do you think this feature is dead and gone in future iMacs?

No one other than an apple engineer really knows, but my guess would be target display mode is gone forever.

It might make a return on future iMacs. I don't see how it could be back ported to the existing ones though because Apple don't follow existing standards with their custom TCON.

It's gone.

I think it will return with thunderbolt 3 when the bandwidth will work with the 5 k screen.

It was strictly a technical thing and I totally agree with you that I think it will be back with thunderbolt 3 as it is very handy to have and there's no reason to not offer it once the bandwith limitations are gone.
