Hi there,

Is it possible to change primary icloud.com e-mail address?

I know you can add aliases, but I want one of the icloud.com aliases I have created to now be my primary address so that I can also change my Apple ID to that specific alias e-mail address, as I cannot change my current Apple ID (...@icloud.com) to an icloud.com alias. Any ideas? Or is it impossible to change the primary icloud.com e-mail address?

THANKS!

If what you're asking about a "primary" email address is how to change the default send from email address, in the Mail app, go to Preferences > Accounts > Email address and pick one from the drop-down menu. On iCloud.com go to the Mail settings > Composing > Set default address. On iOS go to Account > iCloud > scroll to the bottom > Mail > select an email address as the default. Maybe they automatically switch when you change it in one of these locations, but I'm not going to test it.

But if you're asking how to change your Apple ID email address, here's the steps:

And if wanting to change Apple ID, believe the answer is no.

Seem to recall seeing that email aliases cannot be used for any Apple ID.

I recall the same thing, and there are some Apple Discussions saying that as well. I can't find a support article as a reference though.

Edit: Found the reference:

"Note: You can’t delete or turn off a primary iCloud Mail address. You can’t use an alias to create a separate Apple ID, and an email alias can’t be converted to a primary iCloud Mail address."
