iCloud Change ID

My parents have changed their ISP. they used the isp email as their apple I.d. (Example xx@plusnet.com) That is now defunked so obviously want to change it to a gmail.com email address. Which they now use as their email address. I’ve tried alsorts but don’t want to loose their backups, etc. can anyone talk me through this? I’ve looked at tons of videos on utube etc but they are contradicting eachother & don’t fully explain the process. I’ve changed it as their contact for iCloud for receipts, which was straightforward enough.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Incidentally they have iPhones and MacBooks.

I’ve tried everything I can think of and just goes round in circles. Clearly not as easy as you say! Looked in “my iCloud” “manage ID”. There seems to be a new account with the new email address. Frustrating to say the least
