Change in PDF icons-what happened?

I am on Mac High Sierra. All my PDF files showed up with picture icons of the cover of the PDF magazine. But now all the PDF icons are red and white.
Does anyone know how to change this back to the pictures and why did it suddenly start changing to red and white icons whereas before it had pictures?

It sounds like the default app to open pdfs might be Adobe Reader. Do a get info (command+i) on one of the pdfs and tells what the "Open with:" is.

I have tried to set default to both Preview and Acrobat reader. In both cases the icon shows as the red and white icon. It's kind of random . Some folders show pictures, others red and white icons, other folders have a mix. This just started up a week or so ago and some that had pictures are now showing up as red and white icons

You might need to look at your finder options as well. In finder, do CMD-J and select show icon preview. If you want this everywhere - change this to be the default. Does this help? The icon shown suggests Adobe Acrobat is the default application for PDFs rather than Preview.

What happens if you change the view from List to Icons? Does Icon view show the PDF preview properly?

I tried that and it did nothing, The few that have pictures as icons, if I edit the name, it loses the picture. It's as if something updated in the OS that changed the previews
