Change in Time Machine progress reporting in Monterey?

This is not how Time Machine has reported its progress for as long as I can remember. Is this new?

I think I remember there being an estimate of how much total data was being copied, with no percentage of progress.

There's also a new user-facing pre-process wherein the system counts the number of changes – e.g., "Found 324,023 changes..." – prior to showing the percentage process. I guess I like this better (it's more info), but throwing me off after so many years of Time Machine displaying the same thing.
