Like a lot of folks, I have a separate iTunes purchases Apple ID and a .me account for Mobile Me. My iTunes ID is really old, it's not even an email address, just a word. Is it possible to "consolidate" into one basically by changing the ITunes ID to match the Mobile Me/iCloud one? Seems like that would make things easier.
Thanks!

I tried doing that several times today and it continued to give me an error message. Finally, however, it did go through and now my Apple ID is associated with my MobileMe email address. So just try by managing your Apple ID account either on Safari or an iPad/iPhone/iPod Touch or iTunes. I don't know if it will work for everyone or if mine was just a lucky glitch...

Also I did not make the transition to iCloud yet because I don't have Lion on my computers so how far this will actually work is still a mystery to me. Maybe someone else can test this?

Like the OP, my Apple ID (the one I use for all my purchases) is just a word. Let's say it's abc. It happens to be the suffix of my MobileMe email address that is still active (abc@me.com).

Since appleid.apple.com isn't loading on my computer, I just went to my iPad then went to Settings>>Store>>View Account. If you tap on your Apple ID it shows up the email address associated with your Apple ID. I just edited it to be my MobileMe email address. It didn't work the first few times and kept giving me an error but then a few minutes ago, it worked. I'm pretty sure you can change it in either iTunes, an iPhone, iPod Touch, or iPad, or appleid.apple.com (where you go to Manage Accounts). I'm basically following the principles from this: http://support.apple.com/kb/HE40

So now, if I view my Apple ID, the email address associated with it says abc@me.com.

If this doesn't work for others...maybe mine is a mistake =(

That's not what the OP is talking about. All you did was tell apple that for Apple ID "abc" you can reach me at this new email address.

That should work for anybody, no problem.

It did *not* merge the two Apple ID's.....you still have abc@me.com as a separate Apple ID from just "abc"....

You will not be able to merge Apple ID's. Apple at this time is recommending when setting up iPads, iPhones, Macs on iCloud that you use your mobile me Apple ID to set everything up. Then go into Settings on iPad and iPhone and change the iTunes store to use your original Apple ID for store purchases.

So you will still maintain two Apple ID's. The old one for iTunes store, and the new MobileMe/iCloud account for everything else.

I guess I got it mixed up then. I was just never able to change my email address to be my MobileMe address before because it kept giving me an error message.

This is the theory I thought: There are people who are moving to iCloud with their Apple IDs and creating a new @me.com address. Since my Apple ID is already associated with an @me.com address wouldn't that make my situation more ideal? Then...I could theoretically do this what says here, http://support.apple.com/kb/HE40, and make it so that my email (which is my mobileme email address now) be my Apple ID.

I guess not.

When I try to change my iTunes Account email address to my existing @me.com email address, then I get the following message:

* You cannot change this Apple ID to
use an existing MobileMe email
address. If you would like to use your
MobileMe account you can cancel and
Sign in using your MobileMe account
information. The email address you
entered is already associated with an
Apple ID. If it is yours, you can cancel
and sign in using that Apple ID.

Yeah...Like I said...I kept getting that error message too until this one time when I didn't and I thought OMG I FOUND A WAY! But I didn't and now it's showing that error again. YAY...not. This whole thing is such a mess.

Why can't it be that if you have an Apple ID and you move to iCloud, when it says you can create a new @me.com, you can just select a previous one? Is it really that hard?

I was trying to figure this out as well. My solution was to spam the Done button over and over and over. Now my iTunes/App Store ID matches my @me.com e-mail address.

Yeah....I guess I'm just going to drop this idea. It's a shame =(

Either Apple will figure out a way for users to merge accounts or you can create a new Apple ID, which makes your ID and e-mail the same.

The same problem here i guess

My 2 year MobileMe account is ****@me.com
and my iTunes account is *****@gmail.com and i've many purchased apps at that gmail account..
So what will happen now? if we can't merge them,, will it still work for us ? i mean sharing apps between iOS devices and osx devices?

Are they linked? Go to iCloud.com and log in. Look at under Account and see what your Apple ID is.

Mine is strange. Under iCloud in System Preferences it says my Apple ID is abc@me.com—as my e-mail. But in iCloud.com it says my Apple ID is xyz@mac.com.
