Change the behavior of safari tabs

This is my number one problem with the iPad...when visiting a site like the forums here or gizmodo etc. I like to open lots of pages in different tabs while scrolling down the list...then go read the stories or threads one at a time. However on the iPad whenever you open a new tab it automatically selects it...is there any way to have tabs open in the background...seems like it should be a switch in settings, but I couldn't find one.

I don't think it's possible, but it's something I would very much like. I set things up exactly the same way.
