Change the iTunes name?

Many people are complaining of the name "iTunes" when now video podcasts,music videos, and TV shows are offered. People are saying Apple should change the name to iMedia Store or something of that sort... what do you think? IMO I think the iTunes Media Store fits it perfectly because it is mainly all about the music, and the rest is just extras, and to mention; music videos are music...just in another form. There are also issues with changing the name such as the gift cards that they'd have to reproduce using the new name as well as others. Post your feedback.

iTunes is primarily a music application - I hate iTunes media functions, they are very scarse and have little or no options.

iTunes music store has over 2,000,000 SONGS but only 2,000 Music videos and 5 TV shows. Its primarily a MUSIC store.

When you think about it, though, all of the files it uses contain some sort of audio, most often with music. I guess they could change it to iStore...but then misspellings would far too often label it as iSore.

When I heard that iTunes 6 was announced, I was all like, "Yippie!"

When I found out that all they did was incorporate video, which they had already done in iTunes 5, I gave up on any musical advancements.

Frankly, I still think iTunes is still all about the music.

As much as I would choose the name iMedia, I still prefer iTunes as it has always been. Why change the status quo?

I will acknowledge that iMedia has an appeal to it, but my preference would be to maintain the status quo with iTunes. The name is etched in the minds of many and there would need to be a compelling reason for making a change now.

iMedia sounds alright but I think that if iTunes changed its name I would miss it. Granted it does sell more but I agree with the above post in that it is a music store/organizational program and a video/tvshow app second.

I think as more and more television shows and video podcasts become available, and when Apple begins selling movies, they'll release a new application. iTunes for music, music videos, and podcasts, and another program for movies, television, video podcasts, and movie trailers. iMedia, though, sounds so stodgy to me, so boring. (iTunes could just as easily have been iMusic. Bleah.) I'd drop the "i" scheme altogether and go with something like 'Cinema'. The Cinema Store. Something like that. I don't know. I'm grasping at straws from my ass right now. The point, though, the point being that sooner rather than later Apple will have two apps to control media and media sales.

I agree. the ROKR phone doesn't have "iPod" software, it runs "iTunes" even though the interface is nearly identical to the iPod UI. So long as music is the most significant feature for the app, it should remain iTunes. Once the video thing takes off and has enough content to warrant its own online store, the name should be changed. But that means getting all the major networks and all the movie studios to open their libraries and cut into their DVD sales (and all its profits). iMedia seems likely but doesn't have the same feel as iTunes.

Really I feel the iPod will always be a music player first and foremost. The video stuff is a feature of, not a purpose for the iPod. Apple has got to expand the library of online video content to allow for TV playback and HD functionality. This would mean that once the video content is stong enough to rival the Music selections, it should be split off into its own app. The iPod will never be the must-have video playback gadget. That spot is already taken by the Apple laptops.
