It's like having a light on your oven, that used to be on when the oven was turned on, but for some daft reason it now only works when you actually put something in it to cook.
There’s little doubt in my mind that this change is driven by the necessity to clean up the top status bar due to the reduced space resulting from the need for the notch on iPhones which was in turn necessitated by the market’s desire for minimal bezel size/maximum screen real estate. The stupid part about it is that it carries over to iPads that have much more status bar space EVEN IF they get notches too in the next generation. Very short sighted and half a$$ed programming IMO.
