Hi all,

I am having problems changing my @hotmail.co.uk Apple ID to my new @me.com address. Keep getting a message saying that the Apple ID cannot be changed or something along those lines.

Anyway, I can log in to my @hotmail.co.uk iTunes account/Apple ID using my @me.com address but after managing my Apple ID online it says that my promary email address is my @hotmail.co.uk and my alternative email address is my new @me.com address.

Is there any way to completely remove my @hotmail.co.uk address so I can just use my @me.com address as my apple ID and have my @me.com address as my primary email address for my apple ID rather than an alternative?

Thanks

James

P.S. This is my first post

I wanted to do the same thing. I tried doing it on the iTunes Store on my mac with my new @me.com email and it says that it can't be done. In order to get rid of my @hotmail.co.uk I would have to cancel my current account and then open a new iTunes account, no doubt in the process losing everything I've bought over the years!

I think I'm going to create a new @me.com iTunes account and allow it to access my old account, which isn't ideal unless I can work out an alternative!

lol you may want to wait a little longer than 17 min for replies before bumping your thread....just sayin. You cannot change or merge ID's there is an entire thread on this on the front page.

I feel that this is a bit daft of Apple, obviously alot of people would like to use their me.com addresses as there Apple ID and have their me.com address as there one and only email address. However, as it currently stands you need to have an email address from a competitor in order to have a proper apple email address... it seems as though me.com cant work independantly.

I feel their should be an option to change which email address is your default one when managing your account through the apple website.

I have emailed customer services to see if they can make my me.com email address my default so I can delete my hotmail.co.uk from my iTunes account.

But these ID's are currently merged I can log into the same account with either my me.com email address or my hotmail.co.uk email address I just want the hotmail.co.uk removed from my account but there is no option to.

James

P.S. Sorry for bumping wanted to get it sorted lol

This is very sloppy on Apple's behalf. As it stands now, iCloud Mail is simply just a secondary mail service. Maybe Apple is not yet confident enough to make iCloud Mail a solid mail service?

It's very Un-Apple as it stands now.

I agree. I have two ID's one is my .me which is used for my iCloud and the other is a gmail address that I used way long ago as my Apple ID and I cannot merge them into one. For me it works out okay because my wife and kids sync with my on iCloud and my wife uses the .me address for her email, so I do not sync .me email on my MBP or iPhone.

This lets my have all our computers and i Devices stay in sync, but I can still protect my itunes and app store from them making purchases without having to set up restrictions. It really isn't that big of a deal...unless as you said you want to use your .me as your email and Apple ID.

Not sure why Apple isn't letting you merge the ID's other than there must be some concern over people merging ID's and stealing content somehow, ie each ID owned by a different person merged and content from both peoples ID is now available to each party. Honestly there are ways to check and prevent this, so I am not sure if that is the issue.

In your case, if you have no purchases against your hotmail account from the MAS or iTunes I thought I read somewhere that you could just delete or deactivate that iCloud account. Not sure though.

I have tried editing my default email address but it says no... then I tried deleting the alternative email address (me.com one) then changing my promary one to the me.com one still no.... very frustrating.

You can't. It simply says you cannot use your MobileMe email address as primary Apple ID.

It sounds more to me like someone at Apple simply missed this and the option will be made available later.

I hope this is the case, I know that obviously not all the features have been brought up to date as of yet... There should definately be the option of making alternative email addresses your primary one etc... a little check box would do, so this then would allow the deletion of the hotmail address :)
