Waiting to open an account on the Handbrake forums, but this forum is one of the most helpful so I thought I'd ask here. ...And yes, I have searched.

I have some movies that for whatever reason are 4:3 full screen versions that I'd like to rip to a widescreen format (16:9). I would rather avoid grabbing the tv remote and changing the aspect there, but changing it in the file would be much easier.

Handbrake's documentation is certainlyy full of very useful technical details on how it works, but misses the very simple "do this" answer.

Has anyone stretched a 4:3 to 16:9 movie, and if so, how did you do it?

Thanks!
James...

Go into "Picture Settings."

Then deselect "Keep Aspect Ratio." If you want it stretched, simply change the numbers to that the ratio is 16x9 or 1.78:1.

If you need further clarification, let me know.

here are some common ones:
640x360
720x405 (handbrake has it at 720x400)
853x480

How is the quality when you change the ratio?

I just ripped my first movie, and synced it to the :apple:TV. The quality was good, but not wide screen. I had hoped it would be wide screen, but if the quality is not good, then I will stick with the pre-set ratio.

Thanks in advance.

Any idea how to handle this in 0.9.2 (no button for fixed aspect ratio)? Thanks for the feedback so far...

If you stretch it, it'll look horrible. What I've done in the past with 4:3 content is crop it top and bottom to make it into 16:9 ratio. You obviously lose some content from the top and bottom of the picture but personally I prefer that to seeing horrible black bars at the side of my TV (or distorted video)

0.9.2 has the "Keep Aspect Ratio" Button under Picture Settings. It is located in the "Size" section. Uncheck it and you can change the Length and Width separately.
