Hi, I'm a recent switcher and I'm having some trouble permanently changing the file associtions for my .mpg files to play with VLC instead of QuickTime. I can get one particular .mpg file to use VLC as its default, but how do I set VLC as the default for all .mpg files? I knew how to do this in Windows but I'm having some trouble figuring it out on the Mac (if there even is a way?)

Thanks.

Select a file of the type you want to associate. Get info on it, either by hitting command-I, or right clicking and selecting get info, or control-click, whatever. Then there's a tab for "Open with:" Open up that tab, then choose the program you want to use to open that file, in your case VLC, then underneath there's a button that says "change all". Hitting that button will make any file with the same extension open with the application specified.
