I was looking through the April Desktops thread where users post pictures of their current desktops and I saw most people used a different picture than that of just the hard drive. Personally, I would love a picture of a PowerBook to use as my hard drive's icon. Also, I have a 12" PB, yet the icon for my computer looks like what I think is a G4 iMac. Can I change that to a PowerBook as well? Thanks.

Daniel.

Download a set of icons (Interface Lift is good).

Select one of those icons and copy it (Command + C)

Control click (right-click) you HD icon and select get info.
Select the HD icon in info...

Paste (Command + v)

---As for changing your computer icon, it's not as easy; a 3rd part app would probably be necessary.

this is what you do. get your icon apple I it, click the preview of the icon on top, not the big one, but the top one and apple c. go to your hd, apple v then it should be good. :)

eh. EricNau beat me to it.

To change the icon on your desktop, the first job is find a new one you like the look of. Once you've got it downloaded...

1. Select the new icon you want to change your hard drive.
2. Choose "Get Info" from the File Menu, or click command-I.
3. Click the icon in the upper left of the info window.
4. Choose "Copy" from the Edit menu (or type command-C).
5. Select your hard drive on the desktop and "Get Info" for it.
6. Click the icon in the upper left of the info window.
7. Select "Paste" (command-V) from the Edit Menu.

Easy as that and twice as simple.

Daniel.
Just select the changed icon in get info and press delete.

then it will go back to...

Google "osx icons" and download some, select whichever one you want to use, press Cmd+I (Get Info), click on the icon at the top, press Cmd+C (Copy), select the icon you want to change, press Cmd+I, click on the icon at the top, press Cmd+V (Paste). Et voilà!.

The G4 iMac icon, however, is very complicated to change.

Edit: Oh, I see I have been comprehensively outgunned. I'll just get my coat...

I have a good 15" PB icon if you can't find one. I have a 12" myself, but you can hardly tell it's a 15 inch, and the screen is black so it won't contradict with your wallpaper :).

This is an amazing feature of OS X:
If you want to revert the icon to its original, open the information window for the folder, document etc., then click the icon in the top left of the window. Next press "delete", and it will revert.
Absolutely gorgeous, isn't it? :D

EricNau, you beat me to it!

Indeed – you can fiddle around with various files buried away on your hard drive, but a simpler and safer method is to download CandyBar – this'll let you change that particular icon, BurtonCCC, along with various other hard to change ones. It's not a free app, but you can use it on a trial basis for a number of changes, for nowt.
