forgot to mention the one time i managed to get it to change it went back to the default image that was stored for mailbox.app. that was when i added the icon 4 times in the folder with different names

Sounds like you added the com.orchestra.v2 folder directly to the Newport theme bundles. If you did, and while it should be fine, maybe try creating a new folder in var/stash/themes called something like Newport Mods (or whatever name you like), then create a Bundles sub-folder and put your com.orchestra.v2 folder in there. Move it above the Newport theme in Winterboard and re-spring.

Your icon names and size (for the one you posted) look right.

That's up to you. If nothing else, it will insure that your changes are preserved if there is an update to the theme.

The only other thing that comes to mind is to replace the original icon files in the Mailbox.app folder. Just keep in mind you might have to replace the files each time there is an app update.

Which is very rarely with that specific app.

Also you can choose not to update.
 
Ran fsWipeCache and it worked.

I could've tried running my iCleaner as well, I think that solves it.
