changing MBP harddrive void warranty?

I'm thinking of getting a Seagate 160 GB momentus for my MBP...but I have AppleCare and all that good warranty stuff?

If I replace the harddrive, does it void my warranty? I know my harddrive will not be covered by apple, but seagate has a 5 year warranty...

I just don't want to lose my Applecare and have found nothing on the apple site regarding this...

Unless you have it done by an authorized Apple technician, it will void your warranty.

And just so you know, Seagate's 160 GB drive is not yet available with a SATA interface, which is what your MBP requires. Should be coming soon, but it's not out yet.

Not to threadjack, but since you've already answered the topic, I though I'd add this.

I was looking into what was required to get myself Apple Authorized so that I could do some of this stuff myself and not void the warranty. In the fine print, even if you pass the courses and are considered an Apple Authorized Technician, you would still technically be voiding the warranty. Apparently you ALSO need to be part of an Apple authorized service centre, and also have the work approved by Apple before going ahead (so that it's on file in their records). Also, you don't have access to official Apple replacement parts either, you'd have to find them 3rd party, which also voids the warranty (not talking about hard drives...but logic boards, screens, etc.).

Too bad...would have been handy for myself and a few friends (especially for minor stuff...rather than having to send it away for repair).

This is a little confusing because Apple also lists a DIY PDF on how to do it. Why would they tell you how to do it if it voids the warranty. There is also a warning in the PDF that if you do nto follow the instructions properly you could may void the warranty.

Maybe they are just covering themselves against people who are prone to not reading directions and messing things up.

MacBook Pro and MacBook - two different computers. Maybe the warranty is different in terms of switching HDs in them.

Absolutely...swapping the hard drive is a do-it-yourself job for the MacBook. (It's almost easier than adding RAM.) Not so with the MacBook Pro...it involves taking the whole thing apart.
