i searched the forums and couldn't find an alternative way to change my memory on my 24" iMac. i've seen the method of putting the iMac face down on a soft sheet but i really don't want to go about it that way. so if you can point me in the direction of a guide to change the memory without laying it face down i would greatly appreciate it.

You don't have to lay it down, just tilt the screen up as much as it will go and you can access the screw from underneath.
Face down on a towel/blanket is the safest.
Since you have to use some pressure to firmly seat the RAM.
Putting the iMac on the edge of a desk an working from underneath, and then pushing up on the machine -- can be inviting disaster.
All depends on how lucky you feel, or the length of the screwdriver.

I use this method. No upward pressure is needed to seat the ram you squeeze the clips instead. Just move the iMac near the edge of your desk.
However laying it on a towel face down will never harm the machine.
It actually depends on whether the OP's machine is a White iMac or an Alu iMac. On the Alu iMac there are no clips and pressure is required. I place one hand on the top of the iMac while the other pushes the stick underneath from the middle. That or get someone else to steady the iMac while you push with both thumbs. It takes a bit of pressure to seat the RAM poperly on an Alu iMac.
