I'd like to change my Apple ID to my newly created .me account, but I'm not sure how. Right now, my .me account is a alternate email, and my gmail is the primary. So really I just want to switch the two accounts, so that my email is the secondary, and primary is the .me account. When I go into the management of my Apple ID though, and try to set my primary email address, it says "You cannot create an Apple ID using a MobileMe account. If this is your email address, it is also your apple ID".

So i'm confused. Maybe I can't set a primary email to an address that is already set as a alternate, but I'm afraid of what will happen if I delete the address from the alternate list.

In reality all I want is to be able to log in to iCloud, or iTunes, and use my .me account. It is maybe just me being nitty gritty, but logging into iCloud with my gmail account, and then accessing my .me email is well, strange. Ideas?

Can't be done

I spoke to Apple tech support about this the other day. The response I received was that it is not possible to have a username@me.com set as an AppleID. It was explained to me that this sort of email address is "part of" your AppleID and so it cannot "be" your AppleID.

Yeah, I hope they fix this in the future. My current apple ID is associated with my junk email account. Would rather relocate it to my @me account.

This is confusing. My wife and I both had MobileMe. We did the me.com/move of both accounts to iCloud which became our iCloud ID's and our iCloud Email Addresses. Doesn't that mean they ARE AppleID's? I have another AppleID that we use and a shared iTunes AppleID for Purchased Content. What I have heard is you can not MERGE AppleID's.

Apple has posted this to help with the transition. It was last updated October 12, 2011 so it is current. I read carefully and found out I can keep my itunes store account separate from my icloud (me.com) id. Whew.

Same Problem

I've been trying to figure this out for a few days now as well. I just got off the phone with apple, and it was probably the most disappointed I've ever felt with their customer service. It took literally 40 minutes to get an actual employee on the phone. To make it worse he had a thick southern accent which made him somewhat hard to understand at times. I explained to him that I would like to switch my primary email address (gmail) for the newly created me.com email address. He tried to tell me to go to apple's website, and MobileMe.com to change the address. But I already tried that, and it didn't work.

He then asked me for my iPhone serial number. It seemed a little strange but I gave it to him. He then tried to tell me that I don't have iPhone call support because it had expired. I was a little dumb struck to be honest, how is he going to try and tell me he can't help me with my me.com/icloud issue because I my iPhone call support had expired?! Especially after he just tried to resolve the issue but failed when it wasn't an easy fix!! I then told him "well I have a new iMac with the apple care plan that's not even a year old. When I got the apple care, it said that it covered all mac software related issues, this is more of a mac issue than an iPhone issue. actually, it's more of an apple account issue if anything" (or something like that). After that he kept trying to tell me to go to mobileme.com, or appleid.apple.com, or iCloud.com. After about 5 minutes of explaining to him that I've already tried these things multiple times, he said "I'll be honest, there's nothing I can do on my end to help you, all you can do is direct you to the websites I mentioned." So I'm basically right where I started. This is definitely something that apple needs to address, but I feel like it's going to fall on deff ears if people like this are the ones listening. This was probably the worst support I've ever received from apple.

Yes. We would have to understand the structure of AppleIDs to understand why this won't work. I'm not going to waist my time worrying about it at this point. I just want my gCal to sync with my iCal and all that sync with my iCloud calendar. Once that happens then I'll worry about the AppleID issues.

Summary clarification:

If you had a MobileMe account, that @me.com account can be directly converted to an iCloud account.

If you have an AppleID already, that *ISN'T* an @me.com account, you CANNOT "convert" it to an @me.com account. It has to be associated with a non-@me.com email address.

(Although, confusingly, for some services, you *CAN* use an @me.com address as a valid address - such as for FaceTime. Which means that when you convert your MobileMe account to an iCloud account, and try to use THAT to activate FaceTime, it fails, because your @me.com address is already in use... So I have to use my non-@me.com AppleID to log in to FaceTime to use my @me.com address, which has a separate AppleID.......)

I e-mailed Tim Cook last week expressing my frustration and confusion with iCloud and I got a phone call from Apple today. The guy said Apple has no plans to allow Apple IDs to be merged to converted into @me.com accounts.

I use my @me.com email address as my iCloud Account and my iCloud Email Address and my iMessage Email Address and my FaceTime Email Address so I think you are not completely correct. I think the key is that you need to go into appleid.apple.com and review ALL of you AppleID's. I think you are saying you can only do the VERIFY of a unique Email Address to only 1 Apple ID. But not all AppleID's have "VERIFY" it's Associated Email Address. So the same email address can be on multiple AppleID's but you can not VERIFY it on multiple.

This statement by Apple makes me laugh to sense, we dont want to merge and we dont want to convert we simply want to change our default email addresses to our new me.com email addresses

At the end of the day I just cant understand why @me.com addresses are restricted in this fashion... when we can easily change our hotmail/gmail/aol/yahoo Apple ID's to any other email address.... except Apple's very own me.com email address....

You would have thought an :apple: product would have worked in hand with another :apple: product, or am I just missing the point lol

I brought this up as well but all representative did was point me to a support document and offered sympathy. Still, very shocked that Apple called me.

Yes, if you move an @me.com account to iCloud, and that is the only AppleID you have ever used, you're fine.

My issue is that I had an AppleID that was separate from my MobileMe account. I happened to use that AppleID to turn on FaceTime, using my @me.com address. Now my @me.com address is "associated" with my AppleID that *ISN'T* my MobileMe account. Yes, I *COULD* delete my @me.com address from this AppleID, but I'd rather MERGE the two. (My iTunes account is my non-@me.com AppleID. Again, that AppleID has my @me.com as its associated email address, though! So I have an AppleID that isn't a MobileMe account - but has my @me.com as its associated email address - and I have a MobileMe account that is its own separate AppleID.)
