I hooked up my 15" 2016 MBP to the iPad's 18W charger to see what will happen, and - as expected - it started to charge. Now, before anyone says anything - yes, I know, it would be really, really slow - but I guess it could charge over night. Would I ever charge it, like this? Probably not, but perhaps a few % o charge when you forget to take your (massive) 87W charger with you.

My question is - is this safe for the MBP? Any downsides (other than speed)?

With USB-C I don't know if this matters.

In general with charging you want the amps of the charger to be the same or higher than what the device needs and the voltages to be the same.

What you should do is bring that massive charger with you (leaving the 18W at home) and charge your iPad and laptop with the 87W one.
