We have an old iPad which has lain in a drawer for a couple of years. It has the old wide charging port. I have plugged it in and a battery symBol with a little red line appears, but does not seem to progress at all.
Is it likely that the battery is completely dead, or is there a technique to revive a battery in this situation?
If it is dead then the iPad might as well go in the bin.

Battery is probably dead. It wouldn’t be much good to you even if it did turn on. The battery and other electronics also mean it shouldn’t go in the bin. Best to drop it off at a store or facility that accepts e-waste. In the US, Best Buy and Staples will often take e-waste. Well-run municipalities will also take it.

Thanks for the reply, when I said "in the bin" I didn't mean that literally! There is a local place for recycling old electronics such as phone etc.
After a couple of hours it is clearing charging and has got to 37%, so I will leave it and see how it goes. I guess even if it does charge it may have short battery life? I am giving to our club who were asking if anyone had an old one that was going spare, so am hoping it will be useful to them.

It will probably work well. The reason why it took a while to charge is because it was probably very depleted (0% isn’t the real 0%, but it always loses some charge, even while it is off), but if it started up, it is probably fine.

iPads with 30-pin connectors have good battery life, even if they’re many years old.

I would try plugging it to a mac and running Coconut Battery...Could also be cable issue.

Thanks for all your replies. It reached 100% after a few hours, and is still showing that next day after being disconnected.
I will take it to the Club tomorrow and hope they can make use of it.
