My daughter’s iPP will not charge from the port. If it’s on the MK, and she plugs into that, it works. Hard restarting it has made it work a couple times, but obviously there’s an issue.

What’s it looking like with trying to get anything done through Apple right now. She works online so cannot be without it, and our local Apple store is closed until further notice.

Even with a couple of stores re-opened here in NC, the staff are not very helpful these days and the waits are excruciating.

If I were in your place, I would call Apple and get the problematic iPad sent off ASAP. The same day I'd buy another iPad (locally via Target, BestBuy, or your carrier) to use while the current one is sent away for repair. I would then return the temporary iPad within the 14-day return window.

Depending on how pokey Apple insists on being with the repair process, you may have to buy and return a temporary iPad a couple of times.

It's a sad reality of "AppleCare" support these days.

Did you get AppleCare on it? If so, I'd start a chat with Apple and request an express replacement. I've done this with iPhones and Airpods, and its a great benefit of AppleCare.

Great suggestion, but she may be without an iPad for several days even with an "Express" Replacement.

Apple behaves as Apple tends to behave: the marketing terms and promises are not usually reality.

The lead times of new retail units are weeks out. I'd wager then that an "express" replacement will take 1 week at minimum these days.

Yep, not sure what the turnaround time will be, but at least you don't send in your old iPad until the new one arrives, so a least OP's daughter could keep using the MK to charge it until the replacement gets there.

She does have Applecare. I think the chat route might be a good idea.

I’d be tempted to wait it out unless the AppleCare+ is expiring in the next few months. If she charges it to 100% on the MK, it doesn’t shut off if she removes it does it? An iPad that doesn’t take a charge would be a much bigger problem right now, hopefully it doesn’t get to that.

Has she tried the charging brick for one of the children’s iPads, in case it is an issue with her 12W (I think in US, and haven’t heard of iPP’s using different) adapter?

The 2018 and 2020 iPPs come with 18W USB PD charger and USB-C to USB-C cable, iirc.

If it's still within return frame, I would return it so that you get a brand new unit and not a refurbished one. Depending on your location, you can get a new one shipped quick from bestbuy or costco.

Express Replacement is overnight delivery. I've been getting Apple deliveries recently via Standard Delivery, which is 2-day air, even across country, and they've been on time. I'd have no reason to think an Express Replacement wouldn't be overnight. And you don't return your original device until after you receive the replacement.
