Hey guys, just a simple question. I never really payed attention to my charger when i was gaming through bootcamp. The charger runs normally, how it should when im just browsing around online and stuff. But when I'm gaming, for instance on Max Payne 3. It would go green light then to orange and so on every 30 secs. Just curious if this occurs to any of you guys out there, or if it is something i should get checked out. Thanks again.

really every 30 seconds.. or just does it often and you are just calling it every 30 seconds?

When the computer is using maximum power it needs more than the 85 watts the power adapter provides. If there is not enough left over power to charge the battery, it stops charging and the light will turn green... when green it might even be using some battery for extra power. At time the power draw lessens, it'll go ahead and try to charge the battery some more. I've never seen it flip back and forth as fast as your saying though.

Well you're right. I did exaggerate a bit. It went green for like 20 min today then orange for a while. Thing is, yesterday it was extremely hot and the fans were pretty intense, usually I'd play near my windows with air hitting it every now and then like today. But yesterday was just humid and hot. Do you think that could have effected it? But besides all that, the whole light turning green then orange is pretty normal? When I'm not gaming it's normal just when I play.

its not the heat... thats just a side effect. When you push the machine really hard, it just doesn't have the power left over to charge the battery. A side effect of pushing the machine that hard is it also gets very hot.

Ah I see. When it started occuring i kinda freaked out and asked apple, told them everything i told you, but I guess they couldn't really focus on the gaming part. They encouraged me to go to the Apple store. You think i should go or save myself an mta metro card and just forget about it?

it sounds normal. If you are not doing much and it starts charging fine, then I doubt you have anything to worry about.

why are you spending so much time checking? This is all normal operation like I explained earlier in the thread.

Some people get confused, especially when they call the power plug a "charger"

When you plug your laptop in, it stops using the battery and runs completely off wall power just like there was no battery there. There is a limited amount of power coming in... extra power goes to charging up the battery if it needs charging. If there is no extra power, like when you game and its maxing out the power, then it stops charging the battery because there is simply not enough power to do it.

So yes, when you push the machine hard and its using up so much power there is not any left over to charge the battery, the light will change green, meaning its not charging the battery. When you get to a lighter load, or at times in the game when the power usage goes down enough, it'll charge it up some while it can.

Doh123 is right, I hadnt had the chance of thanking you or responding doh123. But yeah it's all about pushing the Mac to its limit. So you can relax, yes it is normal. Even people who don't have macs to game but other actual gaming laptops, it's recommended for them to have their charger connected while gaming. Take a chill pill dude :)
