iPod charging my iPod mini

I've just got a iPod mini - but I seem to be having trouble charging it. I've had it on charge for about 7-8 hours and the indicator show's that its still charging!!! I assume the indicator goes up when its charging as it does as power is being used!!

Does anyone know what the problem may be?

Also is there anyway of stopping the iPod automatically charging when you connect it to a PC or is it meant to charge this way?

the first charge or two will typically take a long time.. i've had better luck pluggin the ipod into a wall outlet upon charging.. rather than plugged into the computer. just wait for it to finish, i think it took about 8 hours for my ipod to charge the first time.

and yes it's meant to charge whenever it's plugged into a power source.
 
First charge should last as long as possible (isn't 10-12 hours recommended?) typically over night or similar.

Later it will charge whenever connected to a 6 pin FireWire port an Macs (and theoreticly PCs, but I'd stick to USB2) or a 'hot' USB2 port on PC (or Mac?). A 4 pin FireWire (anybody apart from Sony using them?) or non-powered USB port will, of course not be able to charge, so that may be a way around. Note that it will only start charging if the battery has dipped below 95%.

The battery is said to have no 'memory', so you can charge it before its empty and interrupt it before it's fully charged without harming it, but as you only get about 500 charge cycles I will not recommend that you do it to often... ;)

There is a 'hack' if you want to connect it to a live FireWire port without charging, but as that involves crippeling the cord/contact this is not recommended.
