iPad Pro Charging question

So I got my new iPad Pro yesterday and played with it for about three hours. I went to bed I put it on the charger and powered it down but when I woke up this morning it was fully charged but the iPad was not turned off anymore it was powered on. Is that normal with the new iPad? My 2018 iPad Pro I went through the same procedure but I always powered it up in the morning. Thanks!

Yes, it reboots once it reaches 100% charge.
 
Just curious why you’re powering it down completely instead of just putting it to sleep? The iPad is designed to be on all the time. It doesn’t hurt anything to power it down; I’m just curious why you would.

Can anybody else give me some feedback on this? I just tested my 2018 iPad Pro and charged it all the way up and it stayed shut off. Both of my iPads the 2018 and the 2021 iPad pros are running on the same updated software

I guess you just answered your own question. Same software, different behavior...

I'm one of those people who turns things off when not in use. That includes my Mac Mini and my iPad. I guess it's because I'm so accustomed to doing that for things that were not designed to be on all the time... like everything else I use.

Don't be silly. Just use it. You've started several threads about turning your Apple products off. They are designed to be on or asleep 24/7 and do not need to be turned off–ever.

Funnily enough, back in the day one of the most compelling things about Macs for me was the fact that you could leave them on. They weren’t noisy, didn’t use a ton of energy at idle, and didn’t deal with weird issues causing hangs when left idle for hours like Windows 9x PC’s of the day.

Back in the spinning hard drive, CPU’s measured in megahertz era, it was super awesome that I could leave a Mac on and it was just ready to go whenever I wanted to use it.

I meant to imply that the difference was in the hardware, since the behavior is the different using the same software. Others have reported the same thing you did, and my iPad8 also stays on after charging even when I don't turn it on before plugging it in. In any case, it's not a problem that will "burn out" the iPad or even affect the charge. You have to unplug the charger, so if you want the iPad off, turn it off.

Is it necessary to completely just charge the battery on the new iPad Pro fifth generation that just came out?

Also is it better to charge the iPad while it’s powered on or off?
 
mine arrived with precisely 80% battery so i just started using it, as i had read recent best practices for my iphone 12pro that the optimal charging is to go between 40% and 80% (it's also possible that is incorrect or was more specifically magsafe related)

i have let it fully charge since then just because i'm not always paying attention.

could be wrong but i think if you start charging it while it's off it will turn on regardless?

I don't think I have ever turned off any iPad that I have owned. Always on, always leave it on when charging, etc. I do an occasional restart here and there but that's about it.

Well, I haven't tried that, but, after turning it off then you would no longer be able to see what % charge you have. You'd just be guessing as to when to unplug it. I don't see the benefit of doing this, but it did answer the OP's question.

I don't remember if it shows percentage but you can know if the device is still charging or has completed. Just quick press on the power button and a large battery icon in the middle will show up.

Well, if that won't show you a percentage, it's not very helpful. Knowing how far along it is gives you a clue about when you should check it again.

It does show the battery gauge though so you can just kinda eyeball that. It's not really a hardship for me to check after 2-3 hours if it's done, nor would it bother me if it's left plugged in overnight.

I've had devices that didn't show the battery percent at all (e.g. Kindle Paperwhite on 5.9 and older firmware). I'd just unplug those when the bar is full and plug in when the battery gauge is at around the quarter mark.

With that said, I don't see much point in powering off the iPad unless it's not going to be used for weeks or something.
