I've read about how fast the S4 charges when plugged into the official Samsung wall socket charger. And it surely does charge fast.

My question then concerns charging in the car. I'm using a USB to MicroUSB cable plugged into a $5 car charger. Unfortunately, it barely charges the phone.

Do I need to shop for an official Samsung car charger or are there comparable options on the market?

Get one off Amazon that does 2A out. I found one that does and it charges just as quick. Got it at Microcenter for like $2.50

Clearly it sounds as if currently the device isn't getting enough power via the charger in the car. Buying a 3rd party one might be cheaper but I assume at least with the official one it will provide the proper power output to charge the phone, and if it doesn't you could return it.

Personally speaking I'd be hesitant over charging my device with a charger that isn't providing the proper power supply the device needs, in case it cases damage to the battery or such. (might do nothing, but I'd still be fearful) and so I'd spend the extra and get the official one. But that's just me - I'd rather spend the extra just for the peace of mind.

Look at the "output A" (amp) on both. Higher will charge the battery faster.

My S3 never charges with an in car charger. It does indicate it is charging but I see no different in percentage.
