Hi Guys,

I have a question about charging the iPad Pro so my question is, is it ok if I charge the iPad Pro via my Monitor ? I have a Dell Monitor which has a Downstream Port so it can be used to get your device charged. It provides around 200 Watts of power when connected to an Upstream Port. My question is will it be safe to charge the iPad Pro this way ? Will it not cause any harm or hamper the life or functioning of the iPad Pro battery ?

Please advise guys.

Thanks in Advance !

It's safe, but not all USB ports can sufficiently charge all iPads, depending on power output.

A Monitor having Downstream Port provides higher Wattage of power compared to a normal USB Port. That is the difference.

Not necessarily. I know the USB ports on our Dell monitors at work provide just 5V/0.5A.

Mind, the iPad Pro will only pull 30-40W (USB PD) regardless of maximum output wattage on the monitor's downstream port.

I've never been able to charge my iPad Pros from my windows machines. They ask for too much power. In fact, some of my USB C docks don't like the iPad Pro and Mac OS warns that the dock is asking for too much power. The only iPads I've been able to charge from my PCs are minis (which I don't own anymore).

The only computer I've owned that can charge my iPad Pro 11s is my MBP - via USB C.

For your question OP? It should be safe. The charging unit in the iPad will ask for what it wants and if it can't find a wattage it wants it'll just charge really really slowly.

I would have no problem plugging my iPad Pro 11 into that. I have it plugged into a 100W Anker charger right now.

Did you read my question properly? I am asking about charging through a USB downport which is not like your standard USB port.

Yeah the 200watts was a good indicator that it was not a normal USB port on a machine. Top part of my post was geared towards other posters. I plug my iPad into 100watt chargers all the time - usb c. You should be fine.
