hey, i'm looking for good external hard drives around 250 GB of space. most of the external hard drives with that price is around 50% more than a hard drive that you can buy for a pc.

i don't care about style, or brand, or build your own, I just want the cheapest external hard drive solution that is 250 GB, and can be capatible with a pc and my ibook g4.

any suggestions? is buy-your-own-hard-drive and a seperate-external-hard-drive case cheaper than those one hard drive solutions?

i was considering Lacie, but i find the price to be higher than other comparable solutions. it's a good product, but i'm tight on cash right now.

Check out zipzoomfly.com and newegg.com for places with really good prices. I think it may be a little cheaper to put your own together, but you'd have to do the math on exactly which combination you wanted to go with. I've ordered several items from both those websites and they have been excellent.

what happens when it's a problem for this 16 year old guy with no credit card, bank accounts, and only pocket money? ;) i would love to check it out, if I can buy from those stores

Is there a CompUSA around? Sometimes (every few weeks or so) they run sales where they'll have a hard drive like that for like $80-100 or something and then you can get and enclosure there too for probably like $40 or so. The only problem is some of that will be mail in rebates...

Look on ebay, and see if there are any COD deals? Or ask the seller if they can organise COD for you?

My dad managed to buy a 300GB for really cheap. I can ask him where from and see if you want to have a look. It cost about £50 but i don't know if it is portable. (I doubt it).

oh yea, I forgot to say, i live in Hong Kong  so there's no compUSA stores around here.

Uhm.. so you're asking where to buy, or what to buy?
Seeing you're in Hong Kong, I suppose it's the latter?

Just get an external caddy and buy an internal HDD. That's what I just did. Got an external 250G HDD now for £70. Does firewire 400 and USB 2.

Where did you get that from???? Websites please

I got a 250gb Samsung hard drive from NewEgg for $90 a few months ago, plus a USB enclosure for $30. Now, I'm thinking of buying a new Firewire enclosure, so I can boot from it if I want to.

cheap is cheap

hey there, sorry if this note sounds like coming from a parent, but i'm...um.. a parent so here goes :)

cheap is cheap. i know you are obviously cash conscious and i think that is smart. BUT, there is something to be said about buying something which may be more expensive up front, but last longer. ie. you may spend $150 now for a cheap external, but if it crashes and dies in a year and you have to buy another, you'd be worse off than buying a $200 name brand now which has a warranty and lasts longer. most externals have a 2 year warranty on them from name brand like lacie, maxtor etc..

just my 2 cents. best of luck
