In 2014 Apple updated their old outdated storage plans. In 2015 they updated them again. In 2016 they added a higher storage tier. Here is the breakdown:

2011: Apple introduces iCloud storage tiers. iCloud has a slow start and there isn't much need for a lot of storage space.

2014:
  • 5GB unchanged, free
  • 20GB went from $40/yr ($3.33/mo) to $0.99/mo
  • 50GB at $100/yr ($8.33/mo) to new 200GB for $3.99/mo
  • New 500GB for $9.99/mo
  • New 1TB for $19.99/mo
2015:
  • 5GB unchanged, free
  • 20GB went from $0.99/mo to 50GB for the same price
  • 200GB went from $3.99/mo to $2.99/mo
  • 500GB went away
  • 1TB went from $19.99/mo to $9.99/mo
2016: Apple added 2TB for $19.99/mo, everything else unchanged

2017: Price drops?

I think, given the pattern, we're likely to see some price drops this year since they went a whole year without them. Personally, this is what I'd like to see:

2017:
  • 20GB free (5GB isn't even enough to really try it out any more)
  • 100GB for $0.99/mo
  • 500GB for $3.99/mo
  • 1TB for $7.99/mo
  • 2TB for $14.99/mo
What do you guys think?

I hope so. 100 GB for 0.99$ a month would be outstanding. I hope Apple realizes the expansion with Cloud Storage is much needed and affordable rates to follow.

I just really want a cheaper option between 200GB and 1TB. For about a year I kept cutting down my photos, screenshots and videos to keep under the 200GB threshold—to the point where I could no longer make them fit without removing important stuff. My iCloud Photos only go back to 2011 because at some point I had cleared them off on my local machine. However, I'd like to keep those photos accessible on my phone going forward because of all the machine learning powered searching and everything else that is making it easier to find the photos I want to see from the past. I find myself doing this a lot more since I had my first kid in early 2014, and the vast majority of the storage space has been used since both my kids were born. I have 250GB used out of 1TB and I had to go from $2.99/mo to $9.99/mo, or $84 extra per year for something I barely take advantage of (50GB out of 800GB extra).
