I called applecare because apple store gave the line that they cannot find anything wrong with it. I opened a case with apple engineering and they said that they will get back to me.

I just picked up the repaired one and it is much better.

Backlight is not 100% even. Still a little dark in the middle but nowhere near as bad as before.

So there. Be persistent and Apple will come through.

You did explain to them that you weren't actually using the 'uplighter' wallpaper? ;)

That's a pretty nasty backlight problem there.

If the Apple Store doesn't help you then maybe you should go find an Authorized Service Centre and see if they can help you - although if you just bought the computer recently then Apple should really be offering an exchange or a full refund.

Update -

Apple Engineering is a joke. They said for a consumer level product that is normal.

I said BS. This machine is close to $2200 new and should have a great display for that price. They recommended I buy the 30 ACD if I want a good display.

What a bunch of jokers.

Anyway I asked for customer relations and showed him these photos.

He agreed to replace the panel and curiously sent me to an authorized apple repair center even though the apple store is close to my house.

It is like Apples quality control is low and they know it so they send me somewhere else to get it repaired because they know the geniuses are trained to say that any kind of display defect except a dead display is normal.

This is some serious BS.. just go back to an Apple Store and demand either an exchange or a refund if nothing works out!

This is exactly what happened to me. It's operating within specification I'm stuck with mine but it isnt near as bad. The first time apple has pissed me off without compensation. Oh yeah they offered me ilife 09 WOOOOPTIEDOOO

This is probably spot on.

Geniuses are usually used to diagnose problems and send it to a repair center that way they aren't spending time fixing so many problems and can help more customers. They sent you to the authorized repair center because it will be faster for you and not hold up a genius that could be helping someone else.

interesting excuse  or maybe the simple reason is; the customer relations thought the engineers in the apple store were idiots!

I have a genius appointment next Monday to (hopefully) get the panel or the backlight in mine replaced (giant horizontal dark spot across the screen). If they tell me "it's normal" they're going to enter a whole new world of verbal pain :p

If they refuse to replace the panel/backlight, I'll ask for a brand new one. Failing that, I'll get my money back. I am absolutely not leaving that store until I get it fixed or replaced.

(Not intending to hijack the thread by the way, just that I have a similarly bad backlight on mine)

The apple engineer I talked to refused to do anything for me

He said that is acceptable for a consumer level product and said that I should buy a cinema display if I wanted a better monitor.

1) The 24 inch cinema display is the same as the imac h-IPS. The only difference is that the cinema display is LED. It also suffers from uneven backlight (I have gone through 4 until I found one I deemed acceptable).

2) The 30 inch costs almost as much as the IMAC. I love them but can't justify spending that much for a monitor.

3) My 3000 17 mbp also has display problems. (Uneven backlight, dead pixel). I went through 3 of these and this is the best one. Is this not a PRO product and not a consumer product? It has PRO in its name!

So my conclusion is that apple is in the same boat as all the other cheap ass hardware coming from the far east to cut costs. Like the infamous TN panels that are used by everyone.

It used to be that no matter what laptop or desktop you picked you got a quality display (Just look at any old laptop you have laying around for the last 10 years or so). None had TN panels. All of them superior to the crap that comes out of the far east.

As far as uneven backlighting - again low quality components.

I can excuse that for 200-1000 laptops where they try to cut costs. But for a $3000 laptop they should not be using TN panels and there should be no problems with backlighting or dead pixels.

I asked to be transfered to customer relations and they set up a replacement after hearing how unhappy I was about the quality of products coming from apple these days.

I really don't understand how apple think. They sell the most expensive laptops in the market and they expect customers to have similar expectations toward their products as they do toward a PC.

What i am trying to say; I understand if i pay few hundred dollars for a laptop and then get few defects, but we are paying thousands of dollars to get good quality professional products.

Sorry for the rant, the things i am hearing about apple recently are unbelievable!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
