I was booting into os10.1.5 when this error message popped up. i grabbed my digital camera and took a shot of it. More funny than anything else, but kinda scary too. I turned the Cube off and rebooted without a problem.

I've had two kernel panics occur, both were my fault. but neither had the line "we are hanging here"... i like that. i bet it would be tremendously funny if you hadn't saved any of your work ;) What does a jaguar kernel panic look like? mine were with 10.1 and 10.1.5, respectively.

Honestly I don't know what a kernel panic looks like first hand in 10.2. I've never had one on my new Dual/GHz/DDR PowerMac. I use to get kernel panics once a month with 10.1.x on my B/W G3.

The kernel panic in Jaguar has none of the freaky code going all over your screen... the screen simply darkens and a message comes up in about 4 languages saying how to restart your computer...

Had it once when I tried to quit TalkBack.. which is the app that starts up when Chimera crashes...

I got the Jaguar crash screen the other day too... Hmmm... So much for OSX being 'crashproof'!

Nothing is crash proof and anyone who says that it is is a fool. OSX on the other hand is extremely, extremely, extremely, (Did I say extremely?) stable.

Idiot proof something and god will build a better idiot!

Point taken... :)

But all I did was pull out the USB cable from my digital camera.

It is crash proof if it weren't for some crappy coded apps we use. Just run X with no apps and I guarantee it will NEVER crash. Run an app or 2 and you're likely hood of crashing increases, especially when using haxies.

I was not pointing my insult at you. It was just a humorous generalized statement. For some reason it's the little things that make X crash when it does. I am fortunate to own a Dual/GHz/DDR Powermac and I must say that I think it's a huge benefit to run hardware that was codeveloped with the software. The machine has not had one fatal crash since I got it at the end of August.

No kernel panics in Jaguar?

The first day I got my Dual Gig DDR I got a kernel panic (looks like the one posted by cr2sh). I haven't had too many of the other kind (posted in 4 languages to reboot). At one point, Jaguar gave me a kernel panic daily (during the period I was playing Return to Castle Wolfenstein)...not during the game, but whenever I'd wake my machine from sleep. Once I was finished with the game, the kernel panics disappeared. I haven't had any since updating to 10.2.3.

i think it was my fault, but there was a time when jaguar was having kernel panics depeding on how and when i hooked my second monitor up to my tibook. if i attatched the second monitor while the PB was asleep, it would wake up to a black screen, i'd restart. if i hooked it up while PB was awake and running on battery i got a kernel panic. if the pb was awake and on AC, no problem. weird, huh?

Respect the Kernel Panic...

I get about 2 kernel panics a week with Jaguar, asnd my Linux systems, allbeit they are my fault 100% of the time
if anyone is interested I will put pictures of them up on my website so people can see what happens when you do things.

White Screen of Death Restart

That four-language instruction to restart your Mac is endemic in 10.2.x. Cost me ( well, Apple) a hard drive, two logic boards and two CPU modules -- not to mention two weeks without a 'puter -- and the box STILL suffers!

Odds are good I'll suffer a panic while I type. Mail seems to get more than its fair share of panics, also Interarchy. Essentially, the bigger the task underway, the more likely a panic.

Some folks say no system is crash-proof, but this is not right!

Some days, the kernel panics 6 or 8 times!

Clean re-installs, pulling RAM, cards, even the SuperDrive, to see if hardware is involved. Looks more and more likely that it's something to do with Apple's USB drivers -- meaning these woes are almost certainly the result of Apple not minding the store. Witness 10.2.8, anyone who doubts. But at least Apple pulled that one from the shelf, admitting something ain't right.

Those who are also suffering might try two steps before screaming (again).

First, reset your firmware. Reboot while pressing command-option-O-F (Oh, not Zero). A terminal-like interface will open.
type these three lines, each followed by a return.

reset-nvram
set-defaults
reset-all

Your computer will reboot. As it does, hold down the Shift key so you start in Safe Mode (hold the shift down until the blue screen appears, saying you're in safe mode. You'll also likely be in BIG TYPE land as the system reverts to 600x800.

I've been running un-panicked now for a few hours since resetting firmware. Next time, I'll reboot reguarly and see what happens.

If this STILL fails, I'll rebuild this ugly thing called IOUSBFamily -- essentially the drivers Apple installs. developer.apple.com has these online.

If THAT fails, I'll re-install IOUSBFamily from 10.2.5 or 10.2.4 -- I don't recall having all those panics while running 10.2.4.

And if THAT fails, another clean install.

And if THAT fails, I'm gonna shove this 'puter somewhere Steve Jobs will find very unsettling.

It ain't right!

Endemic Kernel Panics

Yes, Duck... It is VERY weird that you aren't suffering like the rest of us....

Question: is anyone else hit by kernel panics using an HP USB printer?

Sad to hear about your trouble, but this is definitely not normal for OS X. The message boards of Macrumors (and others sites) would be flooded with complaints if this was something a lot of users were experiencing.

It sounds like a hardware issue IMO, but what it may be exactly is very hard to tell. I'm using a HP printer via USB all the time, total plug'n'print and no problem ever. I keep my fingers crossed you will solve your problems.

kernel panic

The August MacAddict issue (out in June), described kernel panics as "a chronic problem with the majority of 10.2.x updates," and laid the problem at USB's doorstep, specifically the built-in USB device drivers.

So, yes, I am surprised this hasn't shown up in the forums more!

Part of me agrees w/ you, however, that it's hardware. However, if it IS hardware, it's perhaps the USB hub, not something internal. Heck, everything internal has been replaced!

No crashes so far today since resetting firmware, tho. Probably shouldn't have typed that......

I can't see the pic and haven't seen a kernal panic before, but I have only been using OS X for less than a week. So far the only thing that hasn't worked like it should on my computer is MS Office. It crashed and quit on me twice when I installed it because test drive was still on my HD and caused all kinds of weird problems until I deleted everything MS and reinstalled Office.

Not so... We have a G4/533 Digital Audio and it has crashed twice with text flying all over the screen.. Also, the last time it crashed, it gave the dialog like you say.

Personally, if it's going to crash, let's at least throw the text all over and make it look like we're going down in a blaze of glory!

I have had only a few panics ever.

When I used cheap memory in my TiBook. It panicked everytime it booted up.

When 10.2.3 came out, if I had my HP Printer and my SoundSticks hooked up at the same time to my G4 iMac...panic. Apple and HP said it was a problem but I tried anyway. They fixed the issue when they released 10.2.4. no more panics.

The other day i had AVI's on my Cannon Digital Camera, hooked it to my iBook, iPhoto launched and then hung (obviously it didn't know what to do with the AVI's lol) I pulled the USB Cable out and Panic (duh, I mean iPhoto was chugging away and suddenly the camera is gone!).

Other than that I haven't had any other Panics. My bf's iBook has never suffered a single panic since we bought it in February.

I am inclined to belive it's me and not the OS. To the guy having all those problems, I'd ask what kinda of Mac? how much have you changed or upgraded the system? Are u using the right drivers? is the printer listed as compatible with OS X ?

Not trying to say you're at fault but I find that 99.9 % of the time it's something I've done to cause the system to Panic.

kernel panic

I left my Dual 1G G4 running while I went to the gym; excel, word, mail and safari were open, plus Office Notifications, Microtek scanner finder and ASM (which puts a drop-down menu in the upper-right, where god intended it to be...).

Came back; 'puter had panicked while I was out.

Thus, it's not the firmware that's funky. In a moment I'll shut down, put in the stick of memory I'd removed (checking everything!) and unplug the USB hub.

The original panic, btw, was a doozy. Came back from a weekend meeting, booted up and panicked on start-up. Apple doesn't say much about the teeny little whole in the CD drive that lets you pop a stuck disk, so into the shop it went, where the hard drive, logic board, CPU module and fan were all replaced -- twice, in fact.

The day I brought it home -- panic struck again -- BEFORE I'd loaded any of my extensions (like HP's print software).

Fingers crossed it's the hub..... But what is truly enervating is that Apple doesn't have any decent diagnostics available for OSX -- at least as far as I've seen!

Any suggestions out there?
