HI!
I have brought two supposed to by new processor for my mac pro on a amazon seller. They didn't cam from a intel box or anything that look official. They have tiny scratches on the sides. My question Is there a way to verified if they have been used and how old are they ? Is there a soft wear that will give that kind of information ?
Thanks
Noich

I doubt if it's possible in OSX.

Anyway, that surely is not new, even though it's never been installed on any computer, that's still not new.

The definition for "new" in Amazon is very clear.

  • New: Just like it sounds. A brand-new, unused, unopened item in its original packaging, with all original packaging materials included. Original protective wrapping, if any, is intact. Original manufacturer's warranty, if any, still applies, with warranty details included in the listing comments.
You better return them and get the money back. The price for a used CPU should be lower than a new one.

I have look online, processor don't keep any memory or history so it's not possible.
So impossible to know, if they were used overclocked or under a lot of stress.

I have read that mother, cards, harddrive are more likely to breakdown than cpu....

I have order 2x Xeon Processor X5690 (3.46GHz/6-core/12MB/130W) for my mac pro 5,1. $450 each on amazon with 1 year warranty from the sellers.

I look online many 'companies' are selling these processor around the same price as new but many seems used.

I have ask the seller, this is answer:

All our items are new pulls from servers, and they come with a 1 year warranty from us.
I hope that helps

It's almost a joke ! how can they sell them as new while answering like that!!!

The price i paid i think are for used one... It's just very unclear what the reel price of these processor are, I found no 'official' vendors for these cpu.

Is there a cpu test I can run to see if there is any issue ? on mac or win(bootcamp) ?

thanks

There are lots of stress test you can do, one of the free software for CPU /GPU error detection is the OCCT (for Windows only).

The X5690 3.46GHz parts are way over priced. The X5680 3.33GHz parts are half the price & give 96% of the performance i.e. indistinguishable in real life.

Probably because many people just want to be able to say they have 'maxed' out their Mac Pro even if they can't tell the difference?

That would seem to conflict with Amazon's description of "new". I suppose you could return it if you want, but it will be fairly difficult to find truly new processors that are this old, and I suspect there would be a huge price premium.
