I just went to mine because my sister needed a new phone
and they told me that they wont be selling the iPhone
the only place near me that will have it is the Apple store

apparently some ATT stores will offer the phone
and others won't because of size or other reasons

so make sure you are sure the place you are going will have the iPhone
before you show up at 8 and realize you are in the wrong place!

are you sure you went to the AT&T COR and not a reseller ? A lot of resellers will have AT&T bade out in the front but there not COR.

Resellers wont have iPhones to sell since its only available in COR and Apple Store

I was actually wondering about this and was planning to call around the first of the week to see for sure... but when I was looking at the store locator to see if there was a store closer to me than any I was aware of, I noticed that in the description, there were some differences that seemed interesting... here's 3 sample store descriptions from the AT&T locations near me:

AT&T AUTHORIZED RETAILER
12237 CAPITAL BLVD
WAKE FOREST, NC 27587
* Wireless Sales

AT&T AUTHORIZED RETAILER
13200 NEW FALLS OF NEUSE RD
RALEIGH, NC 27614
* Prepaid - GoPhone Refills
* Wireless Bill Payments - Credit Card Only
* Wireless Equipment Upgrade

AT&T
5959 TRIANGLE TOWN BLVD
RALEIGH, NC 27616
* AT&T Internet Services
* Apple iPhone
* Equipment Recycling Program
* Prepaid - GoPhone Equipment
* Prepaid - GoPhone Refills
* Prepaid - TDMA to GSM Migration
* Small Business Specialists
* Wireless Address Book Transfer
* Wireless Bill Payments - Cash & Credit
* Wireless Equipment Upgrade

So that makes me think that maybe the "authorized resellers" just won't have the iPhone at launch, while the actual stores will...
here's the store locator for anyone interested:

^^

Your absolutely correct. Authorized Resellers will not have any iPhones since its exclusive to AT&T COR and Apple.

resellers will definately not sell the iPhone 3G, jus as they never did with the previous model... jus apple and cor att

so even after the initial launch, the resellers never got the iPhone at all? I didn't realize they did that. To get to the closest actual AT&T store nearest me is about an hour... and the closest Apple Store is roughly also an hour... so I probably might as well just go to the Apple store like I was planning, assuming they're opening early.

Everything that was said is correct. When I went to my local AT&T store that is located in a mall, they told me they won't be selling the iPhone. To this day they still don't sell it.

There was a find a store option on the att website that I searched by stores carrying the iphone. It will sort for you.

That is true that the authorized AT&T dealers never had iPhones. My husband has a good friend who owns some authorized dealer stores, but never had the iPhone. They aren't too happy about it, either.

that's interesting and good to know, so thanks for the info, folks. It looks like since my closest AT&T store that would actually have an iPhone is an hour away, I might as well go on to the Apple store as I originally planned.

Sucks for the resellers though. I never go inside AT&T locations (or any wireless carrier locations, for that matter) so I had no idea the resellers never had them at all for sale.

I'm not sure where you live but I'm in Raleigh. Last time the AT&T store at North Hills on Six Forks was selling them but I didn't see it in your list so maybe they're a little further away. But everyone is right when they say only certain stores will carry them. Last time I called around and found that out.

I'm up in Henderson, an hour outside of Raleigh. So my closest option was Wake Forest, but that's just a reseller. Now I have to choose either Durham or Raleigh, with Raleigh probably being the straightest drive.

no it was definantly an ATT store
the only sign out front was ATT
all the employees were wearing ATT shirts
and they tried to sell me their package with internet, TV, and home phone when we got my sisters new phone

Im pretty sure only the real ATT stores sell that

and the guys there knew alot about the phone, so I think theyll have it eventually, just not right away

the salesperson even said that he knows someone (another ATT employee) who got to play with the new iPhone, and claims he knows how to unlock it already

probably bs but interesting nonetheless

Go to this link

Type in your location and select Apple iPhone from the options. This will give all the ATT stores in your area selling the iphone

thanks for the info. Found out there are two ATT&T stores here in town that sell the iPhone. Cool.

Excuse my ignorance, but what is a reseller? An unofficial Apple Store?

An "AT&T Authorized Retailer" is an agent who is authorized to sell AT&T phones and plans. There are many agents in the U.S. such as Best Buy, RadioShack, and many small companies.

Gotcha.

There is a Mac store that sells Apple related items, macs and such, but they don't sell the iphones. That's why they said to me they are not authorized to sell them when I asked if they had iphones.

Thanks Amp!

my ATT store sucks, I went in there last year to get the receipt with the confirmation number for the iPhone and no one in the store had any clue what i was talking about... I went today and this past week to ask a few question on the way from work... They still don't know anything, one of the reps didn't even know the difference between the 3G and 1st Gen iPhone... this is the same thing with all the electronic stores in Harlem... They hire idiots
