Checkbook

I currently use PocketMoney on my Palm-based phone to keep track of my finances. Does anyone suppose Quicken or MS will be releasing an edition for the iPhone?

If not, what are the possibilities of writing my own? Is there an SDK for the iPhone? I'll be really sorry to lose my checkbook when I switch to the iPhone.

That's alright. Once you've bought it, there won't be much left in there to track anyway...

I suppose you might be able to write your own, or perhaps there is a web-based application that could be run from the iPhone.

I'm sure SDKs will eventually be made available - are you an "official" Apple Developer? If so, you'd probably see it before most of us.

One other thought - if you're using only your PDA/cell phone to track your finances, doesn't that lead to issues if it's lost or stolen. Or, for that matter, just broken? How do you back it up - I'm assuming it somehow transfers to a desktop-based application?

It looks like there may be a couple web-based checkbooks out there, I'll have to look deeper into it, thanks for the idea.

I'm no kind of developer at all, but I figure that writing an app whose primary purpose is addition and subtraction can't be *too* hard. If it's just for me it doesn't have to be pretty or anything.

You're right about losing my phone being bad. I treat it like I do my wallet - as cash. It backs up to my computer using hotsync, but I don't have a "home" version of Money - just Palm. So I can only manipulate data on my phone.

Maybe if I become an Apple dev I could write two interlocking programs for the mac and iPhone that autosync when the iPhone gets plugged in. That'd be cool if any work done either place automatically updated.

Let's start submitting requests for FileMaker Mobile for the iPhone. Send the request both to Apple and to FileMaker. Maybe if Steve hears demand coming from both directions, he'll push it.
