How do i check if my new atv2 unit has iOS 4.2 firmware installed.

Go to "Settings", then "General", then "About". Should show Software Version as 4.1.1. Believe it or not, this is how so-called iOS 4.2 shows up on the :apple:TV. If the version shows up as a lower number, select "Update Software" from the same menu to update.

thanks.

why does iOS 4.2 show up as 4.1.1?

I have now updated my iphone 3gs to iOS 4.2.

Assuming I now have current 4.2 FW on my ATV2, how do I make the next step to ensure my ATV2 talks to this iphone so i can use it as a remote and play songs off the iphone to the ATV2?

Reread the post two above this one I quoted. Three above mine.

The Software Version is 4.1.1 and the OS Build Version (iOS) is 4.2.1. They are two different things. While you are looking at the Software Version you can hit the select button and it will show you the the OS Build Version if you want to see the 4.2.1 on the screen.

Oh, so that's what's going on. Interesting.

Install the Remote app on your phone if you haven't already.

Then select Settings --> General --> Remotes --> Remote App on your :apple:TV (using the Apple IR remote) and follow the instructions.
