Checking mail while in safari

I hope I'm not going crazy because I could've sworn I saw this in the videos about the iPad, but isn't there a way to link your email in the top left corner of safari? That way you can see if you receive an email while surfing the web? Or is the only way to check email by hitting the home button and going to the mail icon?
