interesting...

they did that in dc last year with donkeys and elephants. (for the respubs and dems) this year it's panda bears. i think its neat.

on a funny note, after they rounded up all the donkeys and elephants last year, they auctioned them off. they stored them on the lawn of the wardman park marriot (where bush had his big bash) - it was hillarious to see the rows of sculptures just sitting there...

Freekin' horrible - a few years back Chicago had "Cows on Parade." This was at least kind funny and cool - artists from all over did some amazing things to the plexi cows. Then, after the cows, they had metal "furniture" that artists modified, painted, etc. all over town - that was ok as well. This Mickey Mouse thing is godawful and must be killed. It's just more corporate bulldozing of our great American cities. It's bad enough to see the Chicago elevated (el) trains wrapped in marketing for Target - it's another thing to have to gee that damn Disney corporate rat everywhere you go.

I haven't seen many of the Pandas yet. I need to make a trip down to check more of them out.

Isn't he a mouse, and not a rat???? There is a difference, right?

Yes he is a mouse, yes there is a differance between a rat and a mouse.
I really didn't think it mattered.

Mickey is a mouse, but because he works for those ********; disney, he deserves to be rat. You do know that disney uses sweatshops to make thier products right?

Merry Christmas from Disney - made by kids for kids! Mommie, my fingers hurt - shut up and keep sewing - we need 500,000 more Mickey shirts by the end of the day.

right on.

they did this in des moines a couple of times, painted pigs and painted easter eggs, which was kind of cool-- scattering them around, each with a different theme. Then, i went to Iowa City, and their college mascot has been put into the same type of sculpture-- tacky! it was on every streetcorner! And now mickey mouse? booo! It was a cool idea when actual *artists* did it, but now it's sports and commerce... i don't think so.

will be in chicago this weekend, have the urge to do something really nasty... but won't, i'm a good person.

Couldnt agree more...These mice suck!

This whole Mickey Mouse thing is actually because of Mickey's 75th birthday. 75 of these mice were decorated by celebrities and are touring the country. When that's done, they will be auctioned off, with all proceeds being donated to the charity selected by the celebrity that designed each mouse.

Check out all 75 statues, who designed them, and what charity the auction of that statue will benefit here.

i plan on stealing one of these bad boys...or at the very least defiling it.

SCREW DISNEY AND THE LAW!

anyone in chicago with a flat bed?

Right on! The rat is just not the same. It reeks of comercialism and seem contrary to everything public art stands or.

On a related note: The cows came to Beaufort, S.C., a couple years back as "Cows on Vacation." They were a huge hit. We even had our "own" cow, South Cowalina. It was a riot. My wife and I went "cow hunting" with a camera. We went all around the county looking for the cows. I think we got like 24 of the 26 visitors. After reading about where the others were in the paper, we got them as well. But that was cheating.

If I were to go rat hunting, I don't think I'd be taking a camera. Perhaps spray paint and a stencil of the phrase "Disney loves child labor" or something.

the London's Cows were cool and are in Manchester this year

I've managed to find about 30 so far, they're cool but I think I'd feel differently if they were corporate mascots.

actually the local community in Iowa City (where I work) has become quite fond of their "Herkys All Over" as several people have been turned in for defacing them and been charged with drunk and disorderly.

News Report

Cedar Rapids, where I live, has had similar projects twice, once was pretty cool play on Grant Woods "American Gothic" called Overalls all Over, which again, gathered quite a large amount of support from the community.

Milton Keynes in the UK

mk_cow_270.jpg

It was a planned town and people pointed out that the surrounding fields looked a bit sparse. So the genius council constructed concrete cows to make it look like they had livestock.

Wow I didn't know there were any Iowans. I've been to Iowa City several times. Some of those Herkys are cool. I like the Darth Vadar and the all Gold or Silver one by the baseball fields.

At least it's not like Charlotte, NC.

Everywhere you go are (decorated) rocking chairs. Now that's all well and good, but jebus, you're not allowed to sit in them! [sniff]
