- Alphabet Tracing (letterform recognition and demonstration and ability to practice drawing letters, I recommend a stylus for your kid to really get the feel of 'writing' the letter)
- Monkey Preschool Lunchbox (early shape, color and puzzles for preschool or young kids)
- When I grow up (kids mix/match clothing of different professions, for early preschool or young kids)
- Drawing Pad (has paint brushes, crayons, colored pencils) kid friendly interface.
- TC2:USA (number recognition in a game, more gamelike but good for kids)
- Ice Age (problem solving skills, maze and exploration game)
- Bugdom (exploration game, not super educational but good for kids)
- Cat in the hat (has read along text highlighting for word recognition and early reading)
- Super Why! (reading, word recognition and thinking skills)
There's a start on kid-friendly apps for the iPad, not all of them are early reading. It may be hard to sift through all you find to be sure you're not wasting your money. I think the ones listed above are at least worth looking at and not total garbage.
And for the kid in you or adult educational stuff:
- Scrabble or Words With Friends (for word-tile fun)
- Official Sudoku (there are a lot of different ones on the app store)
- Tangram Pro
- Brain Challenge
- Ancient Frog
