chinese font web link problem

a friend in mainland is sending me links to chinese websites but the link is coming out a garbled hieroglyphic in my mail message. i'm running 10.2.8 and chinese fonts seem to work fine otherwise. anybody have a clue?

What browser are you using? I've been using Safari to read Chinese websites but everything almost alwyas turns out fine. If Safari doesn't work, try Mozilla, which works 100% of the time (but is also much less elegant.)

Also, make sure you have the right encoding selected. Websites should usually automatically select the correct encoding for you, but if you get that "garbled hieroglyphics" text, you might need to manually select the encoding yourself. It should be under one of the menus. I'm assuming since your friend is from the mainland, the sites are in Simplified, so you'll want some variant of the "GB" encoding. If they're traditional, you'll want "Big-5" encoding.

Let me know if that doesn't work. Sorry I couldn't be more specific; I'm at work right now using this damn PC

thanks for the reply. it's actually not a browser question (on my end at least) as the text is appear in my email from him as the following:

the links are lost and it reads neither in english or chinese. question: are there websites where the url is in chinese? maybe it's irrelevant.

Weird. What you could possibly do is copy that text and paste it into TextEdit, then select it all and try to view it using a Chinese font, like Apple LiSung Light (for Traditional) or Hei (for Simplified). The method's a bit crude, but it's worth a shot. That way you can at least maybe see what it's saying.

The text is probably garbled for a couple of reasons:

- email server processing
- simple text format

You can't do anything about the email server, so try to make sure you're viewing the email in rich text.

thanks fo the inspiration. highlighted the message, went to Format Menu and choose Text encoding , Simplified Chinese and viola. now if i could only read chinese better...
