I have an Intel Core Duo iMac, and just recently it started making a sort of "chirping" sound. It's really the best way to describe it. It seems to only do it though when I'm writing to an external hard drive, which seems very odd to me. I've backed up my entire system just in case it's a precursor to something worse. But does anyone know what might be up? It's never done this before. It also never did this when I was running 10.4.8 or below, just when I updated to 10.4.9. I don't know if that has anything to do with it or not though.

I tried, but it's too quiet. But it sounds exactly like a bird chirping really fast. It's really the only way I can describe it. And it only does it while it's reading or writing to or from an external hard drive. I did not try the usual because I'm not quite sure what the usual is.
Hmm..wish I could help you , but im really not all that experienced with macs. Is it really that annoying? Do you think you'll be able to live with it? I mean, I dont use my external HD that often, and when I do, it's for like 10 minutes maybe...if I used it very often though I would probably be annoyed. Sorry for not being of much help 
Actually no, I can't live with it. I haven't tried it yet since I updated, but if I need to record with my iMac and it's chirping away while I use an external, it'll interfere with the recording. I use external hard drives often, and it's just annoying to say the least, let alone the problem it'll pose while recording.
EDIT: I realize now that it makes no sense for me to first say it's too quiet for me to record to post here, and then say it might interfere with other recordings. What I meant to say was that in the setting I am currently in with the available mics I have with me at hte moment (my internal laptop mic) I am unable to capture the sound worth being distinguishable. But in a quieter setting with more sensitive mics, I'm sure it'll be very easy to pick it up.

I did a little, but it's kinda hard since "chirping" isn't exactly a technical term. Anything I found in reference to chirping wasn't from the same situations as me, so I'm not even sure if it's the same chirping. Thanks for trying to help out anyways though.
