True, but wouldn’t that indicate a software issue that is causing the thermal management issue??

Could also be a bad batch cpu/gpu in our iPhones, or a batch with faulty heat management.
What worries me the most right now is that no youtuber or news en review sites have covered this, so we can’ t confirm if every xs has the same issues.

If 12.0.1 drops next week and that doesn’t solve it then maybe it’s a swap at the apple store. But that could be a lottery

Someone has already tried it with dev beta, and it did not solve anyting related to the stutter
Currently on the 12.1 beta and the stuttering isn’t as bad as on 12 but it’s still there. I actually might have more stuttering when watching SDR content. But there has been an improvement so maybe an software issue?

When Apple shipped the 12.1 maybe they didn’t know or haven’t fixed it yet. 12.0.1 will be much later version
[doublepost=1538154904][/doublepost]I spoke to apple support today and the guy was pretty clueless but asked me to reset all settings....I did it and straight away the stutter was 95% gone, but not totally. Then I put my settings back and the full stutter came back. Convinced now it’s software and maybe I’ll go through settings one by one and see if I can get it smooth

I tried resetting and deleting everything. Then started with nothing except the Youtube App and Video App. Every setting on default, I saw no changes, still stutter.

After I had done the reset all settings, I put them all back and then did a force reboot
Since then I’ve watched an hour of lost in space with no stuttering......will report back if it comes back

how do you get HDR anyways? i already have the highest level plan, does it automatically play hdr on the iphone? on my tv i get a notification.

There definitly is a problem with the Max, I shot a video to demonstrate the difference between ipad pro and the Max. The Max died while playing the video. Second time this happens. Watch th video:

Then i finally after reboot I got a proper video. See how the Max stutter heavily compared to Ipad Pro:

https://streamable.com/xxkjf

Media: SDR 1080p Hidden Figures 28.5Mbps 24fps

Even my iphone SE plays ths movie with no stutter.

Yes, but it seems to happen with movies from iTunes too. (Not the trailers on iTunes , but in the real movies).
We have to keep in mind that this is the first big iphone x so the software isnt optimize as yet. I am sure apple will update on monday

I hope so. Since no news site or youtubers have reported on it, I am not so sure.

Perhaps we should use unbox therapy’ s dislike of apple and tell him this problem.
He’ ll jump on it to make a clip.

Success guaranteed.

I have experienced exactly the same kind of problem micro-stuttering issues on the avengers infinity bought on iTunes. I have an iPhone XS Max also.
Hardware or software problem ? I don't know
[doublepost=1538176426][/doublepost]Same issue. Spent two hours chatting to Apple support. No idea or awareness of the issue, but very patient and attentive all the same. Still working with them on the issue so we’ll see what happens. Pretty darn sloppy though.

Lower res content seems OK. What I “experience” feels almost like a rendering bottleneck, or display delay. Almost like the processor or display mechanics can’t keep up with the data being received.

Applies to local and streaming media in TV app when using HD 4K content. HD on it’s own and “standard” def seems to be better, but it’s very subjective.

Netflix, again, “seemed” OK but my gut says it was not quite right. Amazon the same... HD stuff recorded on my 7plus just weeks ago was fine, regular, slo mo, and time lapse all OK.

Weirdest thing happened last night.
Listened to some music on my Bluetooth headphones, then put on lost in space on Netflix. It played FLAWLESSLY, I mean no stutters whatsoever. Then tried the film Annihilation in HDR, same deal. So it seems using Bluetooth audio and not phone speakers solves it....
If that is a real effect and not fluke, could it be some kind of power draw thing, like the speakers at decent volume prevent the decoding being fast enough somehow??

But sometimes I can watch quite a lot of Netflix without the problems occurring , too.
That is the problem with this issue. Sometimes it works great, sometimes I get slowdowns .
Tried lost in space with my AirPods a moment ago. And... still a lot of stuttering going on.

I’ve experienced the problem while using Bluetooth headphones.

Last night, I turned of refresh apps in the background and put it in power save mode, and that improved things a lot.
But since the problem occurs at random moments, it is almost impossible to figure out what is going on.

Connected my AirPods. Still same problem.

I played some music just before I watched lost in space. Not sure if that’s relevant
also my screen brightness was way down, to maybe 20%

One very interesting thing. The movie that always stutter (SDR 1080p 24fps) is stuttering on all 3 Max I’ve tried it on. So 3/3 devices stutters with this video while iPhone SE plays it perfectly.

You can see the stutter in the post I made earlier with link to stramable.

This is definitely more common than we think.

So no point in replacing phone then until the next iOS update at least
