Yes, but this information really makes me think that all these reviews online are rubbish and shallow. At least a few of them should have caught this.So no point in replacing phone then until the next iOS update at least

Yeah that would be the safest thing to do but there’s usually only 2 weeks to return the phone and the beta hasn’t fixed anything. I might return the phone, check here if any future updates have fixed the stuttering and then buy it.So no point in replacing phone then until the next iOS update at least
Hmm.. It’s possibly just a software issue with the new phones? ios 12 works perfectly on my 8 Plus but really stuttery all around on my XS MaxI will try to play the same movie at 2 XS later today. (Tried it on 3 XS Max).
If those 2 also stutters, then we can safely assume this is existing in pretty much all Xs.
[doublepost=1538223470][/doublepost]Checked 1 XS (had previously tested 3 Max). It stuttered.
1 more XS to test.
Tested yet: 4 devices.

With basic knowledge in statistics, you realize this probably exist on all phones. These phones are bought from different stores and cities.
Reminder, this movie played fine on my work phone. An iPhone SE!
I’ve had much better results since i turned off auto brightness. I wonder if most aren’t getting it as I think it’s turned off by default on iOS these days...
I also tried with true tone off, wich I first thought helped, but it didn’t.Does not make a difference for me.
No auto brightness is working wonders for me at the minute lol go figure
Have you tried watching the problem Netflix content with auto brightness off? I can tell you it fixed my issue which was juddering every so often. Your issue with the 24fps movie is much more reproducable and constant so I think they are different issues. The slowdown and judder I was seeing is gone when I disable auto brightness. Moreover, when I re-enable it and stay in a area of constant brightness, it’s much improved. So I’m convinced that when you watch with auto on and the brightness changes, maybe due to a tv being on or something, the phone is struggling to alter brightness and keep the video smooth possibly due to the PWM implementation in the new phonesI will try to play the same movie at 2 XS later today. I think it may be something to do with how OLED controls the brightness. It uses PWM which pulses the screen on and off at high frequency, maybe the software control of this with auto brightness and the 24hz video is out of whack and causes the intermittent judder
[doublepost=1538243211][/doublepost]And I don’t think your correct on the assumption that Dolby vision sets it’s own brightness. When I turn on auto brightness and go in low light, the image even in Dolby vision is way darker. Now I’ve got auto off and have brightness set to about 50%, the image is way punchier and specular highlights much sparklier, so I’m keeping it like this as the HDR is much better.
I agree about TVs though then hdr does set to max brightness
Yeeeeeah.. Don’t think it’s about auto brightness as I’ve never used it and the stutters have been there from day 1. But there’s definitely been an improvement. iTunes movies still stutter like hell tho.Have you tried watching the problem Netflix content with auto brightness off? Movies (itunes) that really stutter on my XS Max: The Dark Knight, Logan and Blade runner 2049. Can’t tell if trailers stutter but still any kind of video played on this phone looks.. sluggish. Like the phone doesn’t have enough power to play them but obviously it has. I really hope this is just a software issue.I actually don’t have Netflix, need to borrow my girlfriends login to test the stutter. But since I’m able to reproduce the stutter with SDR I don’t see the need for Netflix as of now.

Does the trailers also stutter? Can you give an example of a trailer that stutter so the rest can test it out.
I would have thought the iTunes movies and Netflix hdr would be HEVC and not h264 but I could be wrongI could play HDR John Wick 2 4K 86Mbps without any stutter, using the SW-decoder. That’s a hevc movie. But it could not handle a h264 1080p SDR with a bitrate of 26Mbps. Seems to be a SW issue and not a cpu issue I think. I previously thought it could not control demanding movies due to bad heat management. Can hight bitrate h264-files be the common denominator?

Yeah, and make me insecure if it is only a particular batch. That is what I am most worried about. We need to get some traction on this issue and get it on the front page at least. I was stuck in a car for 45 minutes today and was watching Transformers 2 (don’t judge). It was awful.
The fact that inconsistent issues seem to get lots of traction and this doesn’t is starting to get frustrating.

When you say stutter, do you mean frame skips in the video, or several seconds of slowdown like low FPS when a game lags?I have experienced stutter in various video apps in many downloaded video files.
The interesting thing is, when I was flying the other day, it was stuttering before I boarded but when I switched to airplane mode there was no stuttering in any video i watched.
Just now I experienced stutter in a film in Air Video HD, switched to airplane mode which fixed it. Obviously that is no good for streaming and it is not a solution but there does seem to be a link in my experience. Netflix and Amazon Prime Video both also seemed to lose the stutter when I switched to airplane mode.
